As Benjamin moved, golden light seemed to dance subtly around his fingertips.
…
The meal lasted until 8:30 pm. Just as Benjamin was about to drive Shannon home, she suddenly received a text from Mitchell.
"The identities of the two living souls have been confirmed. I'm sending you the information now."
Shannon thanked Mitchell and tapped on MysticNet to check on the identities of the two living souls.
The man who'd taken over Caleb's body was Jaxon Yales, a struggling D-list actor currently out of town. The elderly woman was Macey Woods, who lived in Seastone.
Shannon first looked up Jaxon's Twitter and saw that he'd been actively posting tweets every day for the past week. There were no signs of a missing soul.
After some thought, she turned to Benjamin and said, "I need to go somewhere. Maybe you should…" She trailed off and meant to suggest he head back on his own.
Benjamin had stood up before she could finish. "I'll take you there."
Shannon immediately fell silent. He was always eager to help, and she was used to it by now.
The two got into the car and drove to an old residential area near the city. Most of the buildings were decades old and housed mainly migrant workers. Most families were crowded into small units.
As Shannon got out of the car, she felt a pang of sympathy. This wasn't the type of place someone like Benjamin would ever visit.
"Why don't you wait in the car? I won't take long." She was going to verify a few things on her own.
As for Benjamin, he had a noble air to him attracting attention from the young ladies.
Shannon's sharp hearing picked up on two girls nearby whispering about coming over to ask for Benjamin's number, but they were hesitant and unsure of the pair's relationship.
Her face grew serious, and she suddenly reached out to gently tug at Benjamin's sleeve. The gesture wasn't overly intimate, but it was enough for the girls to infer something about their relationship.
Since Benjamin was keeping her company in a place like this so late at night, the least she could do was shield him from any bothering from strangers.
Sure enough, the two girls quickly changed their minds after seeing her action and muttered as they walked away, "Oh, he's taken."
Shannon was secretly satisfied with herself, but when she turned to look at Benjamin, she found him watching. To be exact, he was silently observing her antics.
