"Why did you rush back here if there's nothing going on? Why did you take her to your apartment? Are you trying to keep her hidden as your mistress?"
As Marie angrily shouted, she smacked Jaxon on his back.
In the past, she would never have laid her hands on her grandson, but now she believed she must have coddled him too much for him to develop such improper thoughts.
She knew he'd never give up if she didn't firmly beat some sense into him now. She decided to be a strict grandmother for once, but she'd tragically chosen the wrong target.
Jaxon grew increasingly agitated as the cane repeatedly struck him. No one had ever beaten him like this back in his family.
In a fit of rage, he forgot that he was supposed to be Caleb. Grabbing the cane and pushing himself up from the floor, he stood abruptly and shouted, "That's enough, you old hag!"
The words "old hag" left Marie completely stunned. She stared at Caleb in disbelief, and her lips quivered as if she'd been struck by a heavy blow.
Jaxon realized he might have let his true emotions slipped and panicked. He was about to offer an explanation when Marie pointed at him.
She shouted, her voice shaking with fury, "What did you just call me? How dare you speak to me like this for Cecily!"
Marie had never thought of the possibility that Caleb before her wasn't actually her grandson. She thought Caleb must've been bewitched by Cecily, which left her heartbroken and disappointed.
For the first time, resentment toward Cecily began to stir in her heart. How could Caleb have ended up like this?
If she hadn't watched Cecily grow up, she would have almost cursed her as slut right on the spot. Look at what she'd done to Caleb.
Meanwhile, Cecily was completely taken aback when she saw Marie's affection levels toward her drop by ten points in an instant. What the hell did the idiot Jaxon do? How had she been dragged into his mess?
"You can't even admit your feelings, and now you're blaming Cecily for everything. And how dare you curse her…"
She was conflicted. On one hand, she was mad at Caleb for his foolishness, and on the other, she was furious at everything he'd said.
Even if Cecily weren't the issue and it was some other woman, how could he absolve himself of the responsibility and push all the blame onto the other party? She was mad that Caleb turned out to be such a dishonorable and irresponsible man.
She hit Jaxon harder. As she didn't want anyone to overhear the issue between Caleb and Cecily, she'd sent all the household staff away.
Jaxon lost his temper again from the blows. He yanked the cane from her hands and threw it aside.
Then, he shouted at her, "How kind do you think Cecily is? How could you hit your grandson for the sake of an outsider? Are you senile, you fool?"
