There seemed to be nothing wrong with Cecily's words, and Eva instinctively nodded in agreement. "Exactly!"
Marie frowned. She'd always disliked Shannon's involvement with mystic arts and never believed in them.
Since the Jensens vouched for Shannon's abilities, she reluctantly accepted that. But if Shannon had foreseen that Eva'd be kidnapped but had chosen not to warn anyone, that would be heartless and cruel. Eva was her cousin!
Even if she'd given Eva a protective talisman in advance, what if something had still gone wrong given how young and clueless Eva was? Could Shannon take responsibility for that?
This thought deepened Marie's dislike for Shannon, and there were even traces of resentment.
Cecily knew Marie better than anyone and noticed the flicker of displeasure in her eyes. She knew that she'd succeeded in tarnishing Marie's image of Shannon.
But Hector, who'd just finished a phone call, overheard her words. His previously warm smiling eyes turned cold, and a sharp frost swept over his expression.
He glanced at Cecily and asked icily, "Who told you Shannon knew in advance about Eva's kidnapping? Did she tell you that?"
Cecily's heart skipped a beat. She could fool the older members of the Jensens, but Hector was a different story. He had the ability to see through her every thought.
Every time those smiling eyes focused on her, it felt like he was watching her make a fool of herself.
Her face paled as she hastily explained, "No, Hector. I just thought so because of what Eva had said earlier. I assumed Shannon must be really skilled to be able to predict such things in advance."
Hector looked at her and suddenly let out a cold mocking laugh.
Cecily quickly lowered her head and was too frightened to say another word. Marie felt a pang of pity for Cecily, but she couldn't bring herself to scold Hector since he was her favorite grandson.
There was nothing wrong with what Shannon had done, and he now saw that Cecily's comments were somewhat misleading.
"Reminder! Hank's affection level has decreased by 2 points. The current affection level is 71 points."
Cecily flinched at the system's notification and felt her frustration rise. What was wrong with Hank lately? His affection level seemed to drop at the slightest provocation, and she'd worked so hard to build it only to watch it slip away.
As she grew annoyed, she let slip a questioning remark, "If she didn't know in advance, how could she have prepared a talisman and protective emerald pendant?"
She regretted it the moment her words left her mouth. Sure enough, she saw the gazes of the Jensens turn toward her with their eyes filled with curiosity and doubt.
Though Marie sensed something off with Cecily's tone, she agreed that her question made sense. The immobilization protective talismans did seem rather specific.
