Axel soon realized that the suitcase was far heavier than expected.
"It's full of raw stones," Shannon explained. Alongside the raw stones Caleb had found, she'd also brought a few precious ones from her collection.
Axel was stunned to hear that Shannon would bring raw stones instead of cosmetics or clothes to school. He was briefly dumbstruck before snapping back to reality.
"Raw stones… All the more reason for me to carry it."
Nigel was glad to see Axel being so active. After he gave a few more instructions, they set off for the mountain.
With Axel following closely behind, Shannon navigated the path with arrays. They made it up the mountain with ease.
As they were making their way up, they heard new footsteps and labored breathing. Shannon turned around and saw a young man carrying two large boxes as he climbed the stairs.
The man was in his late teens and seemed to be a student at the school. His cheeks were slightly flushed from the burden he was carrying, but his breathing was steady and much better than an average person.
The man, Mike Carney, sensed her gaze and looked up to meet her eyes. He gave her a quick once-over and asked in a certain tone, "You're a new student at the school, right?"
Then, his eyes swept over Axel who was carrying her suitcase. He narrowed his eyes. "This man doesn't seem like he's from the school."
Shannon nodded. "He's just helping me carry my suitcase up the mountain."
Mike sized them up again seeing Axel was there to carry the suitcase. He noticed that though her clothes seemed plain, they were of high-quality fabric and decided she must be wealthy.
His gaze settled on the suitcase Axel was carrying. Then, he came up with a plan and spoke in a self-righteous tone, "The campus is a restricted area, and outsiders are not allowed to enter.
"This staircase is part of the campus grounds, and he shouldn't be climbing it."
Shannon raised an eyebrow and wondered if she'd encountered another "Skylar".
Then, he turned to Shannon and added, "Don't listen to him, Ms. Jensen. I can carry your suitcase just fine. He's just out to make money."
Mike wasn't having it. "I've told you my price is based on real market rates, and even if you make it up, how do you plan to get down? You'll be wandering the mountain all night without someone guiding you."
Axel was momentarily taken aback. He glanced at Shannon for her response.
Shannon eyed Mike and had a vague guess of his identity. But she couldn't just send Axel away since Hector had sent him here.
"Thank you for your offer, but since I brought him up the mountain, I'll make sure he gets down safely."
With that, she turned away to ignore Mike and motioned for Axel to keep up.
Mike was pained by the loss of a hundred-dollar opportunity. He quickly picked up his pace and followed them up the mountain, still carrying his heavy load.
