Back then, Adam had demanded that Shannon give up her room without fully understanding the situation.
Though Shannon wasn't mad about it, he felt regretful just thinking about it.
He had made a mistake once, and he'd never let Marie shift the blame onto Shannon again.
"Mom, we need to clarify things. We discussed Caleb's issue, and I was the one who brought up the deficit of 30 million dollars.
"Scott brought up the matter with the dolls, and Shannon questioned it from her professional standpoint. How was she stirring up negativity?"
Adam's voice was sharp. He exuded a rare sense of authority.
"Shouldn't we get to the bottom of things when something happens in the family? Crying isn't gonna solve anything, is it?"
Adam's sudden insistence on the truth surprised the Jensens and Shannon. It was clear that Marie had said what she did to protect Cecily and was trying to smooth things over.
Given her status among the Jensens and frail health, everyone would go along with her words to keep the peace, especially when she'd just returned home today.
No one had expected Adam to stand his ground when he usually deferred to Marie. His last statement was directed at Cecily.
Although Adam had always pulled a stern look and never hesitated to reprimand the boys in the family, he'd always been lenient with Cecily whenever she'd make mistakes. She was just staying over at the Jensen residence anyway.
This was the first time Adam openly expressed dissatisfaction with Cecily in front of such a large crowd.
While it might seem like he was using his seniority to bully a younger member of the family, Marie was doing the same to Shannon too.
Since Marie wanted to protect Cecily at Shannon's expense, there was no surprise he was making things difficult for Cecily in return.
Sure enough, Cecily froze in place when she heard Adam's words and was too scared to even fake cry. Meanwhile, Marie looked at him in disbelief.
Cecily had been eager to find someone to protect her, and Caleb had hoped that having Marie around would lessen Adam's scolding. Neither of them had considered that the back-and-forth trips might exhaust Marie.
There was no way they could argue against Hector's point.
Although Marie felt uncomfortable with what Hector had said, she instinctively wanted to defend the two. "I just wanted to come home and check on my grandchildren.
"They brought me back just because the doctor said I was much better…"
Before she could finish, Cecily gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Grandma, Hector is right. It was my mistake."
This time, her voice was soft without the usual pretense of innocence. Using the same tactic repeatedly had worn out its effectiveness.
She struggled internally before looking at Hector and made up her mind. "Since Shannon and Scott suspect something's wrong with my dolls, I'll get rid of them all."
