The night air was cool, but the warmth of Benjamin's palm was strikingly noticeable.
As Shannon sensed the heat on the back of her hand, her grip on the umbrella tightened slightly. Her eyes slowly widened in surprise.
She looked at Benjamin with confusion and questions filling her gaze.
As they were too close, his face was almost obscured by the blinding golden light surrounding them, and she couldn't see his expression clearly. But she could hear a familiar hint of concern in his cold voice.
"Does it feel better?"
Shannon was momentarily stunned before realization hit her. As she glanced at the large hand resting earnestly on hers, she suddenly felt a bit embarrassed.
She opened her mouth but closed it again, hesitating. After a moment, she spoke softly, and her voice carried an unusual trace of awkwardness.
"Uh… Your golden light doesn't help with this."
After she said so, his hand stiffened slightly.
The warmth soon withdrew from her hand, and Benjamin's voice returned to its calm tone. "Apologies, I didn't know."
As Shannon heard him apologize, she pursed her lips and seriously explained, "I know you meant well, I just didn't explain properly.
"The wound on my hand was corroded by a grudge, and your golden light helped dispel that grudge and healed me.
"But I'm not injured today, and I'm just drained from using too much spiritual energy, so it doesn't help."
It wasn't entirely useless either. Being around Benjamin did help Shannon recover her spiritual energy faster given his natural spiritual energy purification effect.
But there was no need to mention that since she had benefited from having him heal her with a simple hand grip.
Now that Benjamin was here in person, there was no need for her to go through all that trouble. But she still needed his permission.
Benjamin heard her explanation and decided he wasn't particularly interested in helping a ghost rid itself of grudges, but he didn't immediately reject her request either.
Instead, he asked, "What's your plan if I don't agree?"
Shannon wasn't disappointed by his question. It wasn't his obligation to help, after all.
She simply replied, "If you don't help, I can handle it myself." It would just take more of her energy and tire her out.
Though Shannon kept those thoughts to herself, Benjamin knew that she'd never have asked for his help if it were so easy for her to handle.
As he noticed her slightly paler face than usual, he pressed his lips together before asking in a low voice, "How can I help?"
