Shannon couldn't see what was going on downstairs, but it was very quiet after Benjamin spoke. She could imagine just how awkward it was at the moment.
However, the silence only lasted for a short moment.
Cecily didn't hesitate much before changing the way she addressed Benjamin. Her tone remained calm as if nothing happened.
"Sorry, Mr. Cooper. I heard Scottie calling you that," she explained. "I won't call you that anymore."
She paused for a brief moment before adding, "Mr. Cooper, is Shannon here?"
Benjamin told her plainly, "I asked her to help me with something. I'll have someone send her back later."
Cecily pretended to be curious and asked, "You asked her for help? I never knew you were so superstitious.
Shannon stood at the top of the staircase all the while. Was Cecily planning on staying here to chat with Benjamin until she showed up?
If that was really the case, Shannon had no choice but to face Cecily.
After all, Benjamin was quite the taciturn person.
Before Shannon could make her way down the stairs, she heard Benjamin speak again.
Instead of answering Cecily's question, he simply told her, "You can go back home if you have nothing else to do here."
With that said, he stood up to leave before Cecily could even respond.
"Shannon's safe here," he said. "Hector can call me if he's worried about her."
He was implying that Hector, Shannon's brother, wasn't even worried that she came here. Therefore, it wasn't appropriate that a distant relative like Cecily came here just to see Shannon.
Cecily knew Benjamin wasn't that easy to deal with, but she never thought he would be so straightforward in expressing his dislike for a person.
When their families met in the past, he would at least mind his words. Now, he was so frank in his speech that she failed to come up with a reply.
Although she felt frustrated, Cecily kept a cool and composed front.
Standing up, she politely said, "You misunderstand me. It's not like that. I came just to ask if Shannon was here. I'm relieved to know that she's here. I'll take my leave then"
The table was laden with food. It was probably for dinner since it was almost 8:00 pm. It wasn't too late to consider it dinner, anyway.
The maid took off the food covers when Benjamin led Shannon into the dining room.
Steam rose from the food when the covers were removed. The dishes were still warm since they were constantly heated underneath.
Benjamin didn't explain why he had someone warm the dishes all this time. He simply gestured for Shannon to take a seat.
Although there was extra cutlery prepared for guests, he usually didn't like having guests stay for food.
One could even count the times Hector had stayed for dinner at the Cooper residence. Thus, it was less likely that anyone else stayed for dinner there.
That was why Julian and the maids were taken by surprise when Benjamin asked them to warm the dishes for dinner.
They just didn't have the guts to ask Benjamin why he wanted them to do that all of a sudden.
Shannon wasn't aware of it. All she knew was that dinner was prepared beforehand, so she might as well dig into the food.
