"What makes you think I'd be repulsed by the existence of a universal traveler?"
Looking at Myla, Vincent's voice was low and steady as he countered her question. "Doctors save people, but that doesn't mean universal travelers kill."
People didn't die because universal travelers appeared. They died, and then the universal travelers came.
"Life and death have an order. To me, universal travelers exist to maintain the order of the afterlife. There's nothing wrong with what you do, and if anything, it was my fault that day."
Myla sat still with her head tilted up to look at him. Her eyes widened in shock, and she seemed clearly surprised by his response.
Seeing her reaction, Vincent couldn't help but raise a hand and gently press down on the top of her head.
With her tilted head forced down by his sudden move, she was just about to protest when his low, amused voice came from overhead.
"Oh, and I forgot to tell you one more thing that day.
"The way you fought so hard to protect the person meant to die in someone else's place was seriously cool!"
With her head still lowered, the last two words hit her like a lightning bolt. Her pupils trembled, and her heart started thudding wildly against her chest.
A surge of unfamiliar joy welled up from her chest. She quickly broke away from his hand and lifted her head again to look straight at him.
Her eyes were unbelievably bright as she excitedly asked, "Do you really mean it? You're not saying that just to cheer me up, are you?"
Vincent met her gaze, which was so full of light, and for some reason, he was too embarrassed to maintain eye contact. He turned his head slightly, and the fingers that had just tousled her hair now felt faintly warm.
But his voice remained firm as he replied, "I mean it."
He watched her face burst into a full, radiant smile. Her confident, warm demeanor was the same way she always looked when she showed up at his side.
Somehow, in that moment, he sensed something between them had quietly, invisibly changed.
