Serena couldn't catch a wink the whole night. She gripped the protective pendant that she had purchased from one of the handmaidens at a hefty price.
She assumed the impending horror from last night would return, that Grace would stare at her the entire night again.
To her surprise, Grace simply rose from the bed and sat upright.
Serena buried her head under the covers, clutching the protective pendant in her fist, but she could still hear Grace's slow and deliberate footsteps drawing closer to her bedside.
Her whole body trembled, as if bracing for judgment to fall at any moment.
However, time dragged on. She waited so long that her breathing grew shallow, yet no sound came from the other side.
Just when Serena assumed Grace had left and nervously peeked out from under the quilt, she found herself face to face with a pair of cold, unblinking eyes that had been waiting for her to come up for air.
In the dead of night, Serena's piercing scream rang out again through the entire handmaiden's quarters.
Everyone, including Skye, in the same room, was jolted awake again. This time, the grumbling was louder.
Serena couldn't care less about who was watching. The moment her eyes met Grace's chilling, expressionless gaze, she completely broke down.
She sobbed, "I beg you, have mercy, Grace! I meant you no true harm! I never wished for your death—not truly! I only sought to keep my place beside Her Majesty, not to take your life!
"It was wrong, I know. I see my sin for what it is. Please, I beg of you… Spare me just this once! Please…"
Her hysterical confession echoed through the entire handmaiden's quarters, loud and clear to everyone who had come to complain about the noise.
As they saw Grace standing at the foot of Serena's bed with that empty look, it was clear as day what had happened.
A clear conscience slept well. It was obvious Serena had done something utterly wrong. No wonder Grace's safe turn had caused her so much fear.
Although Skye had her suspicions, she still found it hard to accept the truth. After all, out of the three of them, she had always been the one looking out for the other two as the eldest lady.
As for Adelaide, she didn't live in the handmaiden's quarters, so she was unaware of the strange happenings that night. In the haze of sleep, however, she heard Grace's voice.
Grace stood outside her door, speaking softly to her. "I'm going, Madam Lovell. You must take care of yourself."
At that time, Adelaide didn't fully understand the situation. But as soon as she heard the voice, tears welled up in her eyes.
Her dear apprentice, Grace, had died.
At that instant, she realized why she had felt uneasy, despite hearing news of her return a few days ago. It turned out Grace had never truly returned.
The night she'd disappeared was the moment of her demise.
…
Snowflakes had begun to dance over The Royal Palace, though no one knew exactly when it started.
