Elowen's sudden action caught everyone completely off guard.
Before Leif could even realize that death was looming near, he was completely disintegrated.
Shannon and Benjamin immediately had their guard up, but none of them said a word.
Beside Elowen, Lucan frowned faintly and called out her name with slight helplessness, "Elowen."
Elowen didn't seem to care in the slightest. Her gaze was cold and tinged with disgust as she said, "That little thing carried the stench of malice. I didn't like it."
At the mention of the word "malice", both Shannon and Benjamin stiffened. Vlad's name flashed through their minds almost at the same time.
So, had the connection between Velquin and Vlad been sown as far back as six thousand years ago?
After thinking about it, they realized that even if Leif had grown resentful and wanted to escape the Tricephalon and phoenix clan, why would he go so far as to kill his original two heads and attempt to replace the phoenix?
If he'd been driven by malice, it would all make sense. Plus, the so-called chance he had to shed his old heads and obtain a new body had likely come from Vlad too.
As realization struck them, Shannon and Benjamin were momentarily at a loss for words.
In fact, they'd brought Trevaris to this timeline in hopes of severing his link to Vlad. But now, it seemed he wasn't necessarily safe here.
They had to strengthen Trevaris' part of Velquin's divine soul and act quickly.
With that thought, both of them looked toward the phoenix egg. It showed no signs of hatching.
The silence deepened.
After hearing Elowen mention malice, a subtle tension flickered across Lucan's expression. Yet when he turned to her, his gaze softened a little.
After all, even if she hadn't acted, he would have executed Leif on behalf of the phoenix clan since the latter had betrayed them and murdered his own kind.
Once he confirmed the truth of Benjamin's words, his expression remained unchanged. He fell silent briefly before turning to Elowen and saying, "Calamity looms for the Celestrium Concord. I shall remain here. I can't return with you."
Elowen frowned at his words and seemed displeased. Dragging her snowy hair, she stepped forward and stared at him. "Even if the king and Celestrium Concord are doomed, what does that have to do with you?
"It's a destined calamity even if the rivers and mountains crumble. If you interfere too much, don't you fear attracting punishment from the Divine Power?"
Lucan listened to her stern warning and flatly replied, "If the Divine Power punishes me, I'll accept it."
That answer clearly infuriated her. She spun around, huffing, and began to stomp away.
After two steps, she stopped while still fuming and whipped her tail back in a snap toward his head.
This was the same tail that had obliterated Leif, but when it struck Lucan's head, it was like a gentle itch. It failed to mess up his hair, other than leaving a couple of strands of fox fur behind.
Elowen shot him a death glare. Seeing that he remained completely unmoved, she turned to shoot daggers at Shannon and Benjamin.
