Before Solvanna could confront Shannon, a commotion among the guests erupted and interrupted her train of thought.
A woman, dressed in the attire of a maid, suddenly rushed out from the crowd.
She quickly made her way to the front of the hall, and, upon seeing Solvanna, she exclaimed, "Serelith! You're the real Serelith, aren't you? At last, I found you!"
With that, she kneeled before the Ignis family, her voice trembling with desperation. "Lord Maeric, in times past, the two girls were switched at birth.
"You accepted your own daughter back into the family, yet why did you not return my brother's child? She is the sole bloodline of my brother's family! You cannot so easily take away our flesh and blood!"
As the woman pleaded, she didn't forget to spill the truth about the swapped children. Her words came so rapidly that neither Maeric nor Elysia could stop her in time.
Seeing the guests murmur among themselves, Elysia pulled a long face. She stood up, pointing at the woman and shouting, "Where did this mad woman come from, causing a ruckus here? Seize her at once!"
At her command, a servant rushed forward to grab the woman, but she dodged, raising her voice even louder.
"What I'm saying is the truth! What twin daughters? One of them is clearly of the Crawford family's bloodline!
"Back then, when Lady Elysia and my sister-in-law gave birth at the chapel, the children were switched! The child the Ignis family raised for the past 15 years is undoubtedly a Crawford!"
Just as the woman was about to be seized, a noblewoman among the guests rose to her feet and said plainly, "Who would have thought such a thing could be true? Lord Maeric and Lady Elysia, if what this woman says holds any truth, then deceiving your guests is improper indeed."
The lady who spoke hailed from the household of the Chancellor's Second, though her maiden family had long aligned with the Chancellor himself.
The fact that she chose this very moment to step forward made it abundantly clear who had orchestrated today's scheme.
It stood to reason that the woman posing as a servant had only managed to slip into the manor thanks to the Chancellor's handiwork.
Even so, the words of a single woman, no matter how loud or pitiful, weren't something Elysia could acknowledge outright. Or rather, in a gathering such as this, she couldn't afford to acknowledge it at all.
What she hadn't accounted for was, of course, Shannon. For someone like her, finding a blood relative with a confirmed connection to Solvanna was hardly a challenge at all.
On the other side, the lady of Chancellor's Second seemed entirely unshaken by Elysia's denial. Indeed, her response appeared almost anticipated.
She asked with deliberate nonchalance, "Whether it be truth or fabrication, surely the newly returned Lady Ignis might tell us herself?"
Whether they were twin daughters or a case of mistaken identity, no one would know better than the one at the center of it all.
Her words, light as they seemed, struck with precision. At once, many guests looked toward the platform where Shannon now stood, curiosity alight in their eyes.
Where the guests watched with intrigue, the gazes of Maeric and Elysia burned with unmistakable warning. They knew the Chancellor wouldn't make such a move without reason.
In their hearts, they were certain of one thing. This whole spectacle—the calculated trap—must have been laid by their own daughter.
