Halfway through sipping his milkshake, Trevaris paused slightly at the name that came out of Shannon's mouth.
He held his cup for a long while before tilting his head and looking at her. Though he still wore that innocent, childlike expression, his next words were a shock.
"Shannon, how did you recognize me?"
It couldn't be just because he could peer into malice, could it?
"Benjamin is my fiancé," Shannon replied somewhat abruptly. If it were anyone else, that line might have made no sense, but Vlad understood.
"Oh, I guess he told you about me then."
Trevaris sipped on his milkshake again, as calmly as ever, as if he wasn't worried Shannon would do anything to him.
He was right. She had no intention of making a move in the middle of a bustling shopping mall when she'd decided to come clean. What she wanted was to confirm something.
"Is Trevaris the reincarnation of the phoenix?"
Benjamin eventually told her about the friend he once had, whose body had been devoured by Vlad's malice. That friend was a phoenix named Velquin, whose name stood for five lights.
Not long after hearing about Velquin from Benjamin, Shannon received a message from Kai. The latter had found a child of the phoenix bloodline.
Phoenix flame burned away malice, and that was why Velquin had tried to purify the world's malice with his body.
Even Benjamin hadn't believed Velquin could fail, which showed just how powerful the incarnation of human malice was.
Shannon was certain she'd met Trevaris, but she didn't understand how Vlad had managed to take over Trevaris' body without any warning. Perhaps, the two cohabited the same body.
It was like extreme light and dark, good and evil. Two forces that shouldn't coexist somehow did.
For now, Shannon wanted to know if Trevaris was Velquin's reincarnation. The phoenix might have been devoured, but she believed even after thousands of years, all it would take was a single spark to rise from the ashes once more.
