The fox tail was soft and fluffy, effortlessly absorbing most of the force from Thalia's kick.
Reuben remained as calm as ever, as if her attack was nothing more than a child's playful struggle that could never harm him.
Indeed, she'd never won against him. Plus, he could have easily restrained her, just as he'd bound her wrist. But he chose to block with his tail instead.
It seemed as though having her kick him once was enough to vent her anger.
Thalia cursed in her heart. She hated that look on his face, so she rubbed her foot against his tail twice before stepping back.
Then, she expressionlessly said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you that I stepped on bird poop on my way back. Haven't washed my shoes yet."
Reuben was utterly baffled. His originally unshakeable expression cracked at those words. Even the tail he'd used to block her kick visibly stiffened.
Thalia finally felt satisfied, but the Wynthorpes were furious. She couldn't defeat Reuben, so she resorted to such disgusting tactics. She was still shameless and underhanded even after all these years!
Thalia ignored their hostile glares. On any other day, she might have glared back or fought them all just to shut them up. But right now, she had no patience for that.
Her eyes remained locked onto Reuben, and she watched as his expression slowly turned cold. After a long silence, he finally raised his hand.
As he did, Thalia broke free from the tails binding her wrists and quickly leaped back.
A water vortex formed between them and swirled in the air, sweeping over the tail she'd just kicked. Then, it vanished in just two seconds.
Reuben flicked his cleaned tail. Water droplets scattered through the air, and the tail was once again soft and fluffy.
He turned his gaze back to Thalia and Shannon. Without giving the clan members any chance to escalate the situation, he said, "Mother wants to see you. Come with me."
He met her gaze. After a brief silence, he did not insist and stopped at the door. Seeing him back down, Kai knew better than to force his way in. The two of them were escorted to the side hall.
Once Benjamin and Kai were gone, the doors shut quietly behind Shannon and Thalia.
Eight solemn-looking clan elders stood in rigid formation. Beyond them, a figure sat at the head of the hall. She reclined on a luxurious snow-white bear fur rug, dressed in a simple cyan robe. Her white hair flowed.
One arm rested lightly against the armrest, and her posture appeared relaxed, yet somehow carried an undeniable presence.
With just one glance, Shannon immediately guessed who she was.
Sure enough, beside her, Thalia solemnly called out to the figure on the throne, "Mother."
