In the past, Kai thought of Benjamin as a human and naturally assumed he was the connection.
But if his connection wasn't with Benjamin, who could it be with?
His gaze drifted and suddenly landed on Shannon.
Shannon noticed the thread above his head, the one that represented his connection, swaying slightly. She debated whether to give him a hint when Kai looked at her with burning intensity.
Then, he asked, "Shannon, how did you awaken your supernatural powers back then?"
Before her powers awakened, she'd been completely human. Was her transformation from human to half-demon similar to his transformation from wyrm to dragon? Was there something in the process he could learn from?
Shannon recalled the moment of her supernatural power awakening. Thinking back to when Scarlett's black smoke had pierced through her chest, she looked slightly troubled.
"The way I awakened was rather brutal. There's nothing in it you can learn from."
Since she'd awakened her supernatural powers in another world, everyone else, aside from Thalia, naturally assumed she'd triggered it by accident halfway through a fight.
No one knew the details, not even Benjamin.
But the moment she mentioned the brutal nature of her awakening, Benjamin felt a heat in his palm from back then. Along with it came a sharp pain in his chest, back when he sensed something had happened to her.
That was the past Benjamin's pain, and also his.
He looked down at the palm of his right hand. It was empty, but Benjamin knew something had once been there. There had once been the mark of their marriage contract. It was a sensor that allowed him to sense her whenever she summoned her powers.
Hand in hand, they walked through a pathway lined with villages as flower petals rained from the sky and were surrounded by joyous blessings.
The flower petals that had been black and white slowly bloomed into color. Only she remained gray.
Almost instinctively, he reached out and caught her hand. Shannon turned sharply, and her fresh appearance seemed to overlap with the image of her in the tiara.
Benjamin watched as the Shannon in her memory slowly filled with color. When she looked at him, her eyes glowed with joy.
His dark eyes trembled slightly, and his grip on her hand tightened. For a long moment, he simply stared at her under her confused gaze.
His voice was hoarse and carried an unreadable emotion as he said, "I remember… You and I were married right here."
