"Why do you ask?"
"Your golden light has faded." Shannon continued, "As I said, your golden light is unique. Its existence is synonymous with a golden meritorious halo. It protects you in ways you can't imagine.
"Something must've happened to cause its sudden fading…" When recalling how Benjamin was previously away for work, she asked, "Did you do something recently?"
Benjamin was guilty. "I did nothing."
Nothing like fixing the crack in the earth's pulse, that was for sure.
Her tense expression prompted him to reassure her. "Don't worry. I'm fine."
He knew well that his condition was only temporary. Not to mention, he couldn't tell her the truth yet.
"You can't even see your golden light. I won't take your word for it." Shannon thought Benjamin was unaware of the gravity of the situation.
His golden light could protect him from all attacks of evil spirits, but it also attracted them somehow.
Like a bonfire in the dark of night, the brighter it shone, the more it drew moths to it. Things were fine when the golden light was at its peak. But what would happen if it weakened?
Shannon had never worried about Benjamin's safety because she knew ordinary spirits couldn't hurt him. To her utter surprise, the golden light would fade! Had she gone overboard taking advantage of it?
At that possibility, she secretly shook her head in dismissal. She only took a few golden light particles at a time, and that little amount on him was like a drop in the ocean. If that was the cause of its depletion, it was simply too fragile.
Benjamin was unfazed by her initial plan of recovering his golden light until her last line. His gaze flickered, and he stared at her deeply. "You're saying… You'll share your merits with me?"
"That will be the quickest way." Shannon nodded genuinely. "Coincidentally, we have a mystical tournament happening soon. The school wants us to collect a certain amount of mission points, and I can take you with me.
"Other than that, you can also set up a charitable foundation and donate…"
Benjamin tuned the rest of the conversation. Before him was a girl detailing a plan for the sake of his well-being. Her pure, lilting voice flowered through his heart like a gentle stream, cold yet surprisingly warm.
Without letting her finish, he extended his arms to her and pulled her into an embrace. He initiated a hug for the first time and needed no reason. The faded golden light around him subtly intensified, engulfing her at the same time.
