To avoid further unpleasantness during the birthday party, the Jensens had tactfully put Zane's issue aside.
But now that they were back home, Alex was the first to explode. He glared coldly at Zane and asked through gritted teeth, "Have you been able to talk all this time?"
Zane had spoken in front of everyone earlier, so he made no effort to hide the truth. But instead of speaking, he typed on his phone. "Yes."
The cold emotionless voice seemed to ignite a fuse within Alex. His face darkened as he abruptly reached out and slapped the phone out of Zane's hand. "Stop using that electronic voice to talk to me!"
The loud thud of the phone hitting the ground startled all the Jensens who'd just entered and were settling in.
Even George who rarely showed displeasure frowned. "Alex! Who gave you the permission to act like this in my presence!"
The reprimand from George somewhat subdued Alex's arrogance. "Dad, I didn't do anything…"
Then, he turned frustratedly to George. "But you heard it yourself, he's been able to talk this whole time! He's lied to us for years, and he's even kept it from me, his father!"
As a singer, he'd always been embarrassed by the fact that his son was mute. He'd come to accept it as Zane had always been frail and withdrawn, so Alex hadn't placed much hope in him.
But to find out that Zane, his son, had been lying to him for years was intolerable. Alex fumed. How could he have raised such a son?
Zane remained calm throughout Alex's tirade. Even when the latter's accusation poured forth, he seemed more concerned about retrieving the phone that'd been knocked out of his hands.
He bent over to pick it up, but someone else beat him to it.
Scott squealed in excitement. "Shannon is so cool. She even stands up to the elders."
"Looks like I'm not the only target," Caleb muttered.
"I recognize that talisman. It's a silencing talisman, and she used it on me," Hank murmured.
Aware of their reactions, Alex twitched slightly at Shannon's words. He'd witnessed her ruthlessness earlier during the day, and with Adam and the others watching from the sidelines, he had no choice but to hold himself back.
"Shannon, it's your birthday, and I won't fight you. But disciplining Zane is a matter of my family."
"The Jensen family isn't divided. What concerns your family concerns me too," Shannon rebuked.
