Debra whipped around at the sound.
The maid jumped a little. "Mrs. Houston, what are you doing up here?"
"I-I'm looking for something Erica left behind," Debra replied.
"Miss Mathis's stuff?" The maid was puzzled. "I don't think she left anything."
"How do you know that?"
"Well, she didn't stay long that night. I checked the room afterward while cleaning. Nothing was left behind."
"You were there that night?"
"Yeah, I was on duty. The next morning, I saw her room looked untouched, so I just checked a bit. Nothing was left behind. Did you mix something up?"
"Do you know when she left?"
"Mr. Randy Osborne asked me the same thing the next day. Honestly, I didn't notice. It wasn't until morning, when he told me to bring her breakfast, that I realized she was gone."
"So, you only found out she was missing the next day?"
The maid nodded, but Debra frowned.
"Is Miss Mathis okay? Mr. Randy Osborne seemed pretty worked up that day."
"She always turns in early, though sometimes she's up late with insomnia. We don't go upstairs at night, so I'm not sure." The maid paused, then added, "But that night, I think I heard them arguing. It happens a lot. He doesn't really like her, so they either don't talk or end up fighting."
"Did you catch what they said?"
"Sounded like stuff from way back."
"What kind?"
"You don't know? It's the accident with the Potter family from years ago. Well, before Mr. Osborne married Mrs. Osborne, he was engaged to another woman, who got pregnant. That's the root cause of his hatred and their constant argument."
"She got pregnant... Just that? Is it about the kidnapping case? What's Mr. Osborne got to do with it?"
