Helen Adams glanced over at Bonnie Main and noticed she was definitely settling in better than before.
With a bright grin, Helen popped open a container of mini sausage rolls, the aroma wafting up as she set it in front of Olivia Bennett. “Come on, Olivia, have some while they’re still warm.”
She cracked open another box for herself. “Let’s dig in.”
She bit into a sausage roll, her eyes squinting with pure contentment as she turned to Olivia. “Oh my god, these are delicious. Bonnie knows how to pick the good stuff.”
Across the room, Bonnie heard the commotion and looked over, her gaze lingering for a moment.
Helen, mouth still half-full, gave Bonnie a big thumbs-up. Bonnie’s face barely changed, though a trace of reluctant pride flickered in her eyes. She watched Helen savor the food for a second before turning back to help a customer choose photos.
Helen grinned, nudging Olivia again. “Seriously, eat up before they get cold.”
Olivia’s whole face lit up as she grabbed a fork, taking her time to pick up a sausage roll.
But just as she bit in, savoring the meaty flavor, her stomach lurched. She barely had time to process it before she had to quickly grab a napkin and spit it out.
Helen’s smile faded as she noticed, immediately pouring Olivia a glass of water. “Hey, Olivia, here. Are you feeling sick again?”
It hadn’t been happening all the time, but often enough lately that Helen had gone from surprised to just plain worried.
Olivia took a sip, frowning. “I’m okay. Just… I think my stomach isn’t used to greasy food right now.”
Helen was already reaching for something else. “Let me get—”
She didn’t even finish before Davina Ford handed over a little box of sour gummy bears from the snack table.
“Thanks,” Olivia said, popping one in her mouth. The tartness helped, not exactly pleasant, but enough to settle her stomach a bit.
