From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 48

“Don’t you dare tell Ethan I was the one who told you,” she hissed, wagging a finger for emphasis. Then, like she was late for Sunday brunch, she spun on her heel and all but sprinted away.

Adelina Lane stood there, a storm of emotions in her eyes, clutching her phone. But she didn’t call Ethan Carter. Instead, she scrolled through her contacts, hesitated just a second, and dialed Evan Dale.

It didn’t take long for him to pick up. “Olivia?” he guessed, sounding distracted.

Adelina didn’t bother with pleasantries. “Did Ethan Carter really get married?”

Evan didn’t even try to deny it. “Yeah. He did.”

Honestly, Ethan had never been the secretive type—if he’d told Evan, it meant he wasn’t trying to keep it from the Carter family. He’d even hinted at it before, but Adelina just hadn’t wanted to believe it. Now that she was calling to ask, she probably already knew the answer.

With the confirmation, Adelina finally exhaled. She ended the call, not sure if she should be angry or happy.

On one hand, her son had actually gone and gotten married without so much as a heads-up. On the other, she’d half expected Ethan to be married to his work forever, destined to eat takeout alone in his apartment every night. Who would have thought this workaholic would ever settle down? Miracles do happen.

She found herself wondering what kind of girl had managed to get through to him.

Bathed in the soft glow of the dining room chandelier, curiosity sparkled in her eyes. She chewed her lip, then dialed another number.

Meanwhile, Ethan’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. He could hear the shower running in the bathroom. He glanced at the caller ID, sighed, and stepped out onto the balcony to answer.

“Getting hitched and not even saying a word—Ethan Carter, you are something else,” Adelina’s pent-up frustration finally burst out.

Ethan didn’t sound the least bit surprised. “I’ll bring her home in a few days,” he said calmly, his tone as cool as ever.
