Michelle stayed in the hospital for two more days. She was discharged when the doctors confirmed that she was okay to leave. Leah took Michelle to her house.
Everything looked strange and unfamiliar to Michelle. She couldn't recognize anything. She felt so lost not knowing who she was or where she was.
Leah took her to her bedroom so she could get settled in. Michelle stared in her room for what felt like hours, trying to remember something, even if it were just a flash of memory, but she got nothing making her get frustrated. She went to bed not bothering to come out of the room for the rest of the day.
Michelle woke up the next morning and went into the bathroom to freshen up. She got dressed in a cream button down long sleeve shirt and jeans, she put her hair up in a ponytail before heading downstairs to the living room.
When she got there, she saw Leah with a little baby in her arms. The baby was crying and Leah was trying to calm her down.
"Good morning" Michelle greeted, making her presence known. Leah turned to her
"You're awake"
"Yeah" Michelle replied, taking a seat on the couch. She kept staring at the baby in Leah's arms wondering whose baby she was
"Whose child is this?" She couldn't help but ask.
Leah was unsure if letting Michelle know that the baby is hers would be a good idea because she has no idea how she was going to take the news. She thought of ignoring the question, but on the other hand, the doctor had advised that Michelle needed to be around her loved ones to help her regain her memory.
Michelle kept staring at the baby with much interest, trying to figure out if she knew the baby. Maybe she was a younger sibling or something, since the woman before her claims to be her mother and she looks very comfortable with the child.
Leah sighed before speaking
"The baby is yours"
Michelle was shocked to find out that she was the mother of the baby.
How could she be the mother and can't even remember. This was getting really frustrating.
"My baby?... With whom?" She quietly asked
"With your fiancé, Nathan"
"I have a fiancé?" Michelle asked surprised. This is getting really complicated.
"Yes. The man who brought us home from the hospital is your fiancé"
That man is her fiancé? And he couldn't even look her in the eye. How is that even possible? Is this woman telling the truth?
"Where is he?" Michelle asked
"He went on a business trip" Leah half lied not wanting to tell her that she had asked him to let Michelle live with her.
"Oh.. okay" she quietly replied.
Michelle didn't know how to take all that she was hearing. She wanted to know who she was. She doesn't want to feel helpless like she first felt in the hospital.
"Would you like to hold her?" Leah asked bringing Michelle out of her thoughts.
Michelle wasn't certain if she wanted to hold the baby, but at the same time, there was this sudden urge to hold her. So, she nodded a 'yes'. Leah smiled and handed the crying baby over to her.
Once the baby was in Michelle's arms, she felt a strong bond with the child.
"She's beautiful" she said as she cradled the baby.
Leah felt really happy seeing how Michelle looked at her child with so much love.
"She has your eyes" Leah replied with a smile
"What's her name?" Michelle asked
"Sandra... Yourself and Nathan decided to call her Sandra in honor of his late mother" Leah replied. Michelle nodded in understanding.
They both noticed that the baby had stopped crying and had fallen asleep.
"She's already asleep" Michelle whispered not wanting to wake the baby up.
"Would you like to take her to her room?" Leah asked
"Yes, please" she said and Leah led Michelle to Sandra's bedroom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Derek went to the hospital looking for Michelle. He was told that she had already been discharged. He decided to give Leah a call to know how Michelle was doing.
Leah told him that Michelle was currently staying at her place. He asked if he could come see her. She didn't object, she only gave him a heads up on Michelle's current condition, that she had lost her memory and if he wanted to come visit, he should be careful with what he says because she remembers nothing. He thanked Leah for the information and told her he'd be coming over the next day.
Derek came to Leah's house the next day. He knocked on the door and was received by a maid who led him to the living room. She asked him to wait there while she goes in to call Leah. Leah came into the living room after some minutes to receive Derek.
"How are you feeling?" He asked
"I don't know... I don't remember anything about myself" she said with a shrug
"What's your name?" Michelle asked
"I'm Derek"
"Derek" she said quietly repeating the name, making sure not to forget
"How did I get here?.. I mean, how did I lose my memory?" She blurted out taking Derek by surprise
Derek didn't know how to reply to her question. How could he tell her what had happened without hurting her? Why did she even decide to ask him?
Michelle was staring intensely at Derek. She felt like he knew the reason why she had lost her memory. She chose to ask him about it because her mom wasn't saying anything clear with regards to how she got to the hospital.
"It was an accident... You got involved in an accident" Derek said
"Michelle, I don't want to go into details... You shouldn't be trying to remember such incidents" he continued
Derek was being honest because letting Michelle know how she got to the hospital wasn't going to be pleasant, both to her and himself. He noticed how the look of expectation on her face dropped after he gave that reply, but it was the best thing to do.
Taking her hand in his, he said
"Michelle, I don't want you remembering such things.. you have to trust me... It's best you don't remember what happened"
Michelle felt like she should take what he just said and trust him. But how was she going to trust him when she can't remember who he is.
"Staying here all day isn't helping me" she confessed
"I can help you with whatever you need" Derek assured her.
His words gave Michelle some kind of hope. She couldn't believe this friend of hers was ready to help her get her memory back.
"Derek, I need you to help me remember who I am" she said holding unto his hand tighter than before, like her life depended on it.
Derek stared at their entwined hands with a smile. He smiled at Michelle and said
"I will help you. I promise."
