"Even if all that’s left is a handful of ashes, I still want to see it for myself."
It was because of this statement that Yvette drove Lindsey to the police station and completely disregarded Shaun's admonition.
Lindsey was still wearing her hospital gown, which attracted the attention of passersby as soon as she stepped out of the car.
Her injuries were superficial and not serious. Lindsey straightened her shoulders and back as she walked in. Aside from her pale face and her hospital gown, she did not look like she was injured at all.
On the way over, Yvette kept glancing at Lindsey as she was afraid that Lindsey would have a mental breakdown, but Lindsey was calm.
Lindsey did not know what she would see at the police station. She looked like she had lost her soul, and her body was just trying to resolve some unfinished business.
Her pupils were very dark and heavy as she looked at the entrance of the police station for a while. Yvette dared not rush her and stood aside to observe Lindsey's side profile.
Yvette suddenly thought, ‘What if this happened to me?’
If she was the one going through all this, would she still be able to stand here so calmly?
Even though her parents passed away when she was young, her big brother protected her and took care of her well, so she has had a rather peaceful and happy life so far.
However, peace and happiness could be a blessing, but they could also be her shackles. She could never learn to be tough even though she was brave.
If her loved ones were in trouble, Yvette probably would have collapsed inside the ward by now, not to mention come to verify the bad news.
"Let's go." Lindsey took a deep breath. After that, she walked into the police station by herself.
Yvette saw Lindsey’s slim figure that seemed to be so bony and fragile and could not help but feel her nose twitch again.
The police station was busy with people coming and going. When Lindsey walked in after registering, almost no one noticed her, but soon, the female police officer who had dealt with Lindsey before noticed her presence.
"Ms. Juhl!" The officer was startled and successfully attracted several people who were buried in their pile of paperwork to raise their heads.
The female police officer guided Lindsey to the side and asked her to take a seat, but Lindsey waved her hand to indicate that she did not need to. Lindsey just looked like she could collapse at any moment, but her expression was resolute.
The police just went to the hospital in the morning. Who knew that Lindsey would be awake in the afternoon and personally came over.
"Ms. Juhl, you..." The female police officer probably knew the full story. She sighed in her heart and could not help but ask.
Lindsey interrupted her words. The polite smile she always had on her face previously was gone. Her lips were pursed and her gaze was stern.
"I've already told Captain Jipson. I've come to see..." Lindsey still spoke in a gentle voice, but her face was too tense. When she got to this part of the sentence, she abruptly stopped and did not know how to continue. She just stalled.
The police officer froze for a moment. At this time, Felipe Jipson’s voice suddenly came from behind. He had been working for three days in a row. His voice was hoarse and his face was clearly exhausted and haggard. However, his eyes were shining brightly, and just stood there. The police station that seemed so noisy early immediately became a lot more silent.
She had no choice but to stabilize herself with something. Her throat felt like it was gagged, so much so that she could not help but gulp to relieve that dry and suffocating feeling.
Lindsey did not pay attention to how Felipe communicated with the man in glasses. Her hand was still held by Yvette, which reminded her that this was not a dream.
"Lindsey, why don't we go back for now?" Yvette could not help but ask in a pleading voice. She could already imagine what they would face in a moment. She was not afraid, but she was worried about Lindsey.
Lindsey just shook her head gently. While waiting, Lindsey looked at a blank space on the wall. Her eyes were hollow as if her soul had been drained.
"Ms. Juhl." Felipe's voice carried an authoritativeness that was hard to ignore, but no one noticed him at this moment. Thus, he walked up to Lindsey, who was not far away.
Lindsey looked up and concentrated on the black wooden box in Felipe’s hand.
It was square and not big, without any pattern on it. The solemn black color filled Lindsey's eyes, which made her stand up.
"This..." Felipe handed the box in his hand to Lindsey. His voice was dry and raspy as he said, "This is Zayn's remains."
"Boom!" Lindsey’s mind seemed to explode once again.
This news blew her to pieces, from her heart to her body. Not a single inch of her was intact. The weather in mid-May was hot, but Lindsey’s fingers trembled and her body shook violently in the corridor.
When her fingers touched the box, she retracted her hand like she had been burned.
