Marina cracked her eyes open, giving him a long, measuring look. "Can you read minds?"
Carson met her gaze. "No, but when you care about someone, you notice the shifts in their mood."
Under the heavy cover of night, a glimmer flashed in Marina's eyes. This bastard was flirting with her again.
She arched a brow, the alcohol leaving a faint flush on her cheeks that softened her sharp features into something deeply alluring. "I'm so touched."
Carson laughed, the sound warm as his strikingly handsome face lit up the dim room.
He got up and headed to the kitchen. A moment later, he returned with a bottle of water, unscrewing the cap before setting it in front of her. "I don't have any hangover cures, so water will have to do."
Marina sat up and took a heavy gulp. She drank too fast, splashing a few drops over her nose and brow, which only made her look more radiantly unbothered.
She looked at Carson. "All your hard work was for nothing. My grandmother believed Phoebe Evert's lie about her phone being stolen and hacked. She already forgave her, and even had the nerve to blame me for not visiting Phoebe in the hospital."
The more she spoke, the angrier she got, her jaw clenching tightly. "They want me to visit her? They should be worried I'll pull her oxygen tube the second I get there."
Carson let out a short, sudden laugh. "And here I thought you were upset because you were jealous. Looks like I was flattering myself."
Marina shot him a sideways glance and scoffed. "You really do flatter yourself."
Carson stood and headed toward the master bedroom. "I'm going to sleep."
Marina looked at him in surprise. "You aren't going to say anything?"
Like joining her in cursing Phoebe out, perhaps.
Carson paused and turned back. "With your temper, I know you won't let anyone walk all over you. Besides..."
He offered her a wicked, arrogant wink. "You've got me."
Marina felt a sudden rush to her head, collapsing back onto the couch as if her brain had short-circuited. She waved a hand at him dismissively. "If anyone asks how I died, tell them a lightning bolt meant for your massive ego accidentally hit me."
Carson chuckled at her dramatics, finding her drunk antics highly entertaining. He walked back to her side and lightly patted her cheek. "You really dead?"
Marina hummed an agreement with her eyes shut.
