Marina turned her head slightly to watch Annie go and happened to catch sight of an unfamiliar guy walking away. Curiosity sparked, she asked, "Is that Jonathan?"

Carson scoffed lightly. "Don't call him the second young master. He doesn't rank that high."

Marina looked baffled. Did Barton Foster have another illegitimate child hiding somewhere? "Then who is?"

A smirk pulled at the corner of Carson's mouth. "My dog, Spotty. He's the second son around here."

Marina just stared at him. "..."

She turned her head to hide a laugh. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, fracturing into countless soft, colorful ribbons of light that danced across her elegant jawline and the tip of her nose. Her eyes sparkled with mirth, blending a striking, fierce beauty with radiant warmth. The sight caught Carson completely off guard.

Infected by her smile, Carson felt his own lips pull upward.

It wasn't until they neared the restrooms that Marina belatedly realized Carson was still holding her hand. She naturally ran a little cold, while his palm was intensely warm. The unfamiliar heat sent a sudden jolt through her, and she yanked her hand away as if she'd been burned.

Trying to act nonchalant, she walked briskly toward the door. "I'll be right out!"

Pushing the door open, something occurred to her. She glanced back at him. "Playing the part is fine, but watch your boundaries."

Carson arched a handsome brow. "And who was it making bedroom eyes at me earlier?"

If she was going to throw out a move, did she really expect him not to play along?

Marina was left completely speechless. When on earth did she give him bedroom eyes?!

She stumbled over her words. "I—I was doing that for your sake!"

Carson nodded in mock seriousness. "I know. And out of pure gratitude, I played right along."
