Sara immediately chased after her, grabbing her arm just before she could step into the elevator. "Khloe, wait. It's a complete misunderstanding."
Khloe violently wrenched her arm out of Sara's grip. Her voice dripped with absolute venom. "I see exactly what this is. You kept blocking me from getting close to Adrian, and I actually bought your bullshit about doing it to protect Norah. But you were just saving him for yourself, weren't you?"
"Honestly, Sara? I always looked down on you. You have zero self-respect. You throw yourself at any guy who looks your way. But this? Seducing the guy who's desperately in love with your own friend? Getting him into your bed? You're actually disgusting."
Khloe's eyes were ablaze with pure hatred. She spat the venomous accusations so fast that Sara couldn't even force a word in to defend herself.
The elevator arrived with a soft ding. Khloe marched inside, glaring at Sara with a cold, unrelenting stare. "Don't ever talk to me again. We are completely done."
Sara stood frozen in the hallway, completely paralyzed as she watched the heavy steel doors slide shut. The final image etched in her mind was the blinding resentment burning in Khloe's eyes before the doors sealed completely.
A suffocating wave of despair crashed over her. Her entire body ran ice-cold, rooting her to the floor.
Adrian stepped out of the apartment, his brow tightly furrowed. "I'll call her right now and explain."
Pale as a ghost, Sara shook her head. "Don't bother. Just go. I need to get ready for work anyway."
Adrian studied her with deep concern. "Are you really going to work in this state?"
She forced a shaky, hollow laugh. "You're underestimating me. The sky could literally fall and I'd still clock in. Absolutely nothing stops me from making my paycheck."
Following her back inside, Adrian grabbed his suit jacket. "If you ever need me to clear this up with her, just say the word. I am genuinely so sorry."
"I already told you, it's not your fault. The tension between us was probably building for a while." Sara managed a weak smile. "Khloe can be vicious when she's mad, but she'll cool off. We've fought before. Give it a few days and we'll be back to normal. Seriously, don't worry about it."
"If you're sure." Adrian nodded, heading for the exit. "I'm heading out."
"See ya."
She locked the door behind him and slumped back into the living room. Her gaze fell on the takeout bag Khloe had left on the counter. The vile words her friend had just spat at her echoed through her mind, piercing her chest like jagged glass.
