I didn’t want to believe it, but the thought clawed at me.
Matthew had been there for me once. Could he really have
turned?
“I hope we’re wrong.” I whispered. But Asher had already
severed the mindlink.
Outside, the noise of battle had begun. The air was filled with
people screaming, wolf howling and the clattering sound of
weapons.
The castle entrance was chaos. Everyone was shouting at each
other when I stepped in.
“Enough!” I snapped, cutting through the noise. The crowd
stilled, turning toward me.
My mother’s voice rang out among the crowd. “What’s going
on?”
I didn’t even know she was still here. “What are you still doing here? I thought you always want to stay close by your people. You should go now!‘
Chapter150
Before she could respond, I looked away from her and turned to
the public, “The Royal Council has joined forces with Alpha
Xavier. They’ve declared war on us.”
A murmur of disbelief rippled through the room.
“But why? None of this happened when the former Alpha King
was in power! What had King Asher done to anger the
council?” Someone shouted.
“Oh I thought you all think of the former King as a brutal
tyrant. Didn’t know you miss him so much.” I scoffed, fixing the
person with a sharp stare. The speaker looked down in shame.
“This is not the time to assign blames. There’s a fight ahead of us
and we need to get ready, I continued. “If we’re divided, they
will exploit it. If we stay united, they don’t stand a chance.”
There was silence, then slow nods.
“We’ll follow your lead.” a couple of people said in unison.
Kimberly leaned in and whispered in my ears, “People are scared. But they need to see strength right now.”
I nodded. “Let’s calm everyone down while we wait for news.”
Chapter150
Suddenly I felt small hands wrapped around my leg. I looked
down to find Mia clinging to me.
I lifted her into my arms. “Hey my princess.” I whispered. The
weight of her against my chest reminded me of why we were
fighting.
Then Olivia approached, her eyes shadowed with worry. “I
have bad news.”
I sighed. “I don’t think I can handle worse than this.”
“I mindlinked Jayden trying to figure out if he could sent
backups. But apparently the Silver Moon Pack was under
attack too. We can’t count on their help.”
Damn it.
Before I could respond, my mother’s voice cut in. “Well, the
good news is they won’t attack my pack since we still have the
Celestine flower.”
I turned to her sharply. “We’re in the middle of a war, Mother.
Not everything is about leverage.”
She merely smiled. “Leverage is how you win wars, dear.”
Chapter150
I paced the room, mind racing. “But all of the other allied packs
are in danger. They’ll most likely strike at the same time.”
Olivia nodded. “That would make sense. They knew we’d
retaliate, so they struck first.”
I reached Asher through mindlink again. “Any updates on your
side?”
His voice was tight. “We’re surrounded on all sides. We need to
act fast before they gain the upper hand.”
Things weren’t looking good for us. Asher was fighting for us out there. I wanted to do something too, either to protect our people or to join the battle. Anything.
My mother stepped closer. “I know a way to delay their entry
into the castle–but it won’t hold forever!”
I narrowed my eyes. “What do you mean?”
“Your blood can break down barriers, but it can also create
them.”
I blinked. “Wait–what?”
“We can use it to reinforce a shield. It’ll buy us time.”
