Farewell My Stepfather novel Chapter 25

Chapter 25

Patricia was good at it and complimented everyone naturally while introducing herself.

Getting bored, Paulette sneaked back upstairs and lay on the couch to talk to Jeremiah.

His work in Hotruesia was finished, and he was going back.

“Fine.” Paulette tilted her head backward and said idly, “I’ll stay here for a few more days and use the time to send my resume before joining you.”

“You’re coming to me? Why not the other way around?”

“Well…”

Would Jeremiah…come to see her?

Paulette pressed her lips and said, “Not a good idea. I’m not in Fromond, I’m in the suburbs of another city.”

After two seconds of silence, Jeremiah asked, “You’re in the Chapman’s

mansion?”

“Yes.”

“Babe.” Jeremiah chuckled in resignation. His deep voice sent an electric current into her ear. “Don’t you remember that I’d lived in that neighborhood for years too? My family’s house is still there.”

Paulette was shocked by the endearment, but the latter half of Jeremiah’s words got her attention.

That was right. The Swanson family and the Chapman family were neighbors.

Perhaps Jeremiah just wanted to revisit this place.

She thought for a while and said, “OK. Then I’ll wait for you to come over. No complaints about traveling a long way.”

Nelson opened the door at the same time. He asked darkly, “Who’s coming over?”

Paulette got confused and blinked. She sat up with a frown. “Dad, why didn’t you knock before coming in?”

Nelson just stared at her. He showed no expression except a slight hint of

annoyance.

Why did he have to knock?

He never used to.

His face darkened. “It’s the middle of the day. Why can’t I come in?”

“There’s a line between men and women,” Paulette said calmly. “I’m not a kid anymore. If Ms. Carver finds out, she might take it the wrong way.”

Nelson’s agitation instantly turned into anger.

It was because of Patricia again.

He knew it. Paulette never used to care about stuff like this.

His tone was sharp. “Can’t you just speak normally? What’s with the passive–aggressive nonsense? I just came to tell you dinner’s ready. What’s this about?”

“I won’t.” Sensing Nelson’s jealous tone, Jeremiah lowered his eyes. “I’ll be leaving Fromond in a couple of days. Don’t let it get to you, alright, Ms. Davenport?”

With Jeremiah, Paulette always felt cared for.

She smiled. “I’ll be the bigger person. Let’s just say he’s going through menopause.”

They chatted a bit more before she hung up and went downstairs to eat.

Everyone was already seated. She looked around and sat next to Maxine.

Everyone was seated. She looked around and sat next to Maxine.

“You must be starving, babe,” Maxine said. She beamed while filling a plate with soup. “Grandma made your favorite.”

“Thanks, Maxine. Thanks, Grandma.”

Paulette thanked them and started eating.

Maxine looked at her fondly and remembered the guest. She turned to Patricia and quickly filled a plate for her too. “Sorry, Ms. Carver. Paula’s been spoiled since she was little. I hope you don’t mind.”

Patricia’s smile was stiff. “Of course not. I can see how much you love her.”
