"Sylvia," Reese pleaded, looking at her earnestly. "Come, please?"
Sylvia nodded helplessly. "Alright."
Reese wanted to say something else, but Chris quickly cut in.
"It's about time to process the discharge. Let's not keep the next patient waiting for this room."
Lester picked up the duffel bag by the bed, not lingering. "Reese, I'm going to take Sylvia home first. Be careful on your way back."
"I know," Reese said, waving her hand.
Once Lester and Sylvia had left, Chris grabbed the bouquet and looked at Reese. "Ms. Sanford, come with me for a second."
Reese followed Chris to his office.
Chris slammed the flowers down onto the desk, his tone filled with dissatisfaction. "Ms. Sanford, what exactly are you trying to pull? Don't tell me you came all this way just to say a few words about the wedding."
Reese's lips trembled, and she lowered her eyes, shedding tears. "I'm sorry, I just wanted to see if he was here. I haven't seen him in a week."
Chris massaged his temples. "He's working."
Reese gave a bitter laugh. "You know, yet I, the woman who's about to become his wife, have no idea."
"Ms. Sanford, you and I both know how things stand. Stop pushing him," Chris advised, softening his voice.
But Reese fired back, "He isn't at the company, and he isn't at the hospital. Where on earth did he go?"
Hearing that, Chris knew any further attempts to reason with her would be pointless.
...
On the way back.
Lester held Sylvia's hand, speaking with a touch of apology. "Earlier, Reese..."
"It's fine," Sylvia said, changing the subject and pointing toward a park outside the car window. "Why are there so many people over there?"
"It looks like some kind of event. Want to go check it out?"
"Sure."
After Sylvia got out of the car, she bathed in the sunlight, feeling as if the air was filled with the fresh scent of grass.
Zion came jogging over after parking the car.
"I just asked around. Apparently, it's some sort of market festival. I heard it's a lot of fun, and I even bought a stamp card. If you collect them all, you can exchange them for a prize. Lester, why don't you take Ms. Lloyd for a stroll?"
