Lester set his coffee mug down and looked straight at Tristan.
“Tristan, you know how people online love to jump to conclusions. I trust you’re not the type to take things out of context.”
Being called out by someone younger made Tristan’s face flush with embarrassment.
He glanced over at Rupert, silently pleading for Rupert to step in and say something—if only for the Garcia family’s reputation.
But Rupert just sipped his coffee calmly, pretending not to notice.
Tristan’s expression darkened, and he fell silent.
Meanwhile, Kay looked about as comfortable as someone sitting on a porcupine. Because of Sylvia, she’d not only lost a reliable source of income, but several well-connected ladies had started spreading rumors about her, tanking three or four of her business ventures. Lester’s casual attitude did nothing to ease the sting.
Clutching her mug, Kay pursed her lips and scoffed, “Lester, there are videos and pictures all over the internet. You might want to be careful, or you’ll end up getting played.”
The older members of the Sanford family all frowned at that, and even Scott looked thoughtful.
Lester didn’t rush. “Funny, just the other day I saw a video online of you entering a hotel with another man. Looks like congratulations are in order?”
“That’s fake! How can you believe something like that?” Kay shot back, worried about being misunderstood.
Lester’s smile was gentle, but his eyes were sharp. “Aunt Kay, maybe try not to have double standards. Or do you have actual proof that Sylvia faked her acceptance letter? As far as I know, all her emails with the universities were strictly about academic questions. She never once claimed she’d been accepted.”
Sylvia had always been careful, only discussing subjects and requirements in her correspondence, which had actually worked in her favor.
Kay’s jaw worked as she tried to come up with a retort, but was interrupted by a sudden movement at the head of the table.
Rupert set down his coffee, his eyes dark and intense, more threatening than usual.
“Ms. Winslet, you might not know this, but after Sylvia’s incident went public, several other applicants reported getting similar scam messages. The scammers even mentioned specific interview questions. Now, a lot of students are questioning the university’s data security.”
“That’s impossible!” Kay blurted out before she could stop herself.
