When Zion saw Sylvia waking up, he quickly apologized, “Sorry, Ms. Lloyd.”
Sylvia lowered her eyes, bitterly.
She had seen the storm brewing online, and she’d known this was how it would end.
The Sanford family might not care about old money or fancy backgrounds, but they cared a hell of a lot about character.
And now, she was that girl—accused of faking her college acceptance letter, desperate for attention.
There was no way the Sanfords would ever accept her.
Sylvia glanced apologetically at Lester. “I’m sorry for dragging you into this. Maybe… maybe we should just—”
But Lester squeezed her hand. “Trust me.”
“But…” Sylvia didn’t want to make things harder for him.
“I’ll handle it, okay? Your mom went out to get you something to eat—she’ll be back soon. Just wait for me, alright?” Lester said gently.
“Okay.”
Sylvia watched quietly as he left the room.
Her phone buzzed with the latest trending scandal—something about Kay. But as she tried to read it, the screen suddenly went gray.
Gone.
She knew Rupert had deleted it.
Sylvia put the phone down. The room grew quieter and quieter, until the silence felt suffocating. Despair crept over her again.
She forced herself up and walked over to the window. Budding tree branches, the rush of city traffic, people weaving past each other on the sidewalk—all of it just made her feel more hopeless, more alone.
Behind her, the door opened.
Chris stepped in, voice low. “Sylvia.”
Sylvia turned, tears streaming down her face.
“Christine,” she said, using Chris’s happiest childhood nickname, but her voice was shattered. “I get it now. No matter which road I take, it all leads to a dead end.”
Chris searched for the right words to comfort her, but Sylvia actually smiled through her tears.
“I know what you’re going to say. Honestly, I already know it all—I just didn’t want to believe it.”
“I know it wasn’t him. I know what’s in his medical records. I know everything he’s done for me.”
“And somehow, I can even understand how trapped he was, how helpless.”
