Annalise Johnston stormed up to Harrison, her voice sharp with indignation. He paused, looking at her with icy indifference. “You’re saying you can’t handle that?”

Annalise took a deep breath, trying to keep her temper in check. “Your assistant is treating me like an errand girl. You realize Ms. Lockridge headhunted me from Morgania at a premium. She offered me a director’s position at QuanTech Innovations. If Selene hadn’t cut me off halfway, I’d be running the whole company by now.”

Harrison let out a low, dismissive laugh. “Then why don’t you go back to QuanTech Innovations? Or you can stay here at Vaughn Enterprises and do the work you’re assigned.”

Annalise stared at him, outrage flickering in her eyes. Before she could speak, Harrison added, “If you can’t even manage these simple errands, the janitorial department is still hiring. I’m sure you can handle sweeping floors, can’t you?”

Annalise’s jaw clenched so tightly she thought she might crack a tooth. “Is this why you recruited me? So I could run around doing menial tasks?”

He sneered. “What did you expect? You’re free to leave Vaughn Enterprises any time. I never begged you to stay.”

Her fists were balled so tight her knuckles turned white. This was her very first day at Vaughn Enterprises. If she quit before making it through a single shift, her reputation in all of Capital City would be in tatters.

Her breathing grew ragged with frustration. “You paid top dollar to lure me here just so I could fetch coffee for your staff? If you think that’s a good investment, fine. I’ll do it.”

“Top dollar?” Harrison snorted, the contempt in his voice unmistakable. “The salary for a personal assistant intern is five thousand a month. If you can’t do that, I’ll have HR fire you.”
