She didn’t seem to realize that her words could be taken more than one way. Selene's eyes sparkled, waiting in anticipation for Adrian’s next move.
He studied her for a long moment, as if trying to puzzle out her true intentions, turning her words over and over in his mind.
In the end, the one who cared more was the first to surrender.
“Fine—whatever you want, you can have it.”
Adrian went to make her a cup of tea. Selene watched him as he poured the water and let the tea steep, his movements so graceful it was almost mesmerizing.
She sat behind her desk, pretending to read through some files, but in truth, she was waiting for something else—calm, unhurried, and patient.
Once the tea was ready, Adrian lifted the cup, blew gently on it, and handed it to her.
A delicate aroma drifted up. Selene took a sip and felt her mood instantly lighten.
Just then, a video call request popped up on her computer screen—Gwyneth again.
Selene’s lips curled into a faint smile as she accepted the call, her gaze warm as she looked at Gwyneth’s face on the screen.
Catching the glimmer of amusement in Selene’s dark eyes, Gwyneth faltered for a split second.
She realized Selene had seen right through her and had expected this call all along.
Gwyneth arched an eyebrow, the look of a hunter spotting intriguing prey.
The spark of competition flickered in her eyes.
“I’ve already spoken to Annalise Johnston,” Gwyneth began, her tone brisk. “She completely misunderstood my intentions, so I’ve taken back her access to the executive office.”
It was her way of telling Selene, I’ve given ground—so don’t push me any further.
But both women knew that for every inch Gwyneth gave, she’d demand a mile in return.
“I heard negotiations with Vaughn Enterprises are going well,” Gwyneth continued, “Harrison’s already moving forward with the QuanTech Innovations partnership. After all, Harrison is your ex-husband. With him around, things should be easier for you.”
Selene couldn’t be bothered with Gwyneth’s empty chatter. “Ms. Lockridge, if you could get to the point, please. I’m very busy.”
