Clarissa slid into the seat beside Quentin, immediately noticing his gaze kept drifting toward Selene.
“What are you staring at?” Clarissa’s tone sharpened, a warning edge in her voice.
Quentin startled, straightening up so quickly it was almost comical. “Nothing! I wasn’t looking at anything!”
But Clarissa wouldn’t drop it. “You keep looking at Selene! Why do you keep staring at her?”
There was a fire in Clarissa’s eyes now. Quentin rushed to placate her. “I just saw Altair sitting on her lap, that’s all! I was surprised, honestly. Who would’ve thought he’d be so close with her?”
He leaned in, lowering his voice, eager to gossip. “You know, with how much Selene spoils Altair, don’t you think she might end up as Harrison’s new aunt?”
A mischievous grin crept across Quentin’s face.
“Nothing good ever comes out of your mouth!” Clarissa snapped. As a member of the Vaughn family, just hearing Quentin suggest something like that made her bristle. If such a scandal really did happen, it would be an utter disgrace.
She clenched her jaw. As someone from the Vaughn family, how could she ever hold her head high in the circles of Capital City society after something like that?
“Leo would never do that!” she hissed. “First of all, Selene’s already been married—she was his nephew’s wife! You seriously think Leo would marry her? That’s beyond inappropriate!”
Quentin stroked his chin, eyes flickering back in Selene’s direction.
“After Selene divorced Harrison, she lost all her leverage. Now she’s clinging to the Shaw family for support, but do you really think they’ll accept her? I doubt it. She’s fawning over Altair for a reason—she’s trying to get close to Leo.”
