“Uncle, are those sweet potatoes done yet?”
Luke Holloway was crouched outside the gym, poking at a pile of ashen leaves with a stick. He wore a pair of oven mitts as he pulled foil-wrapped sweet potatoes from the embers.
As Luke peeled back the foil, the sweet, caramel scent drifted out, making Daph’s mouth water instantly.
“Hurry up and give me one!” she pleaded, reaching out.
“Careful, it’s hot,” Luke warned, setting the sweet potato atop a stack of bricks. He rinsed a spoon with bottled water, then handed it to Daph.
She dug out a steaming chunk, blowing on it with exaggerated puffs. Barely able to wait, Daph took a big bite. Her eyes squinted in delight, and the roundness of her cheeks was accentuated by a look of pure satisfaction.
Luke watched her eat with a quiet tenderness in his eyes.

Thompson Victory Technologies.
The signing ceremony wrapped up, and the reception kicked off.
Adrian had just stepped out of the restroom when he nearly collided with Harrison coming the other way.
Harrison stumbled back, but not before a splash of red wine landed squarely on Adrian’s suit jacket. Crimson liquid seeped across the peacock-shaped brooch Selene had just given him.
Admiring his handiwork, Harrison sneered, “Mr. Shaw, maybe you should watch where you’re going. Keep acting like you’re above everyone else, and next time it won’t just be your suit that gets ruined.”
With a flourish, Harrison tipped his glass downward, the remaining wine drenching the toe of Adrian’s polished shoes.
He smirked, voice dripping with disdain. “The cameras in this hallway are out, but you can always run to Selene and whine. Isn’t that what you do best—playing the helpless little lamb in front of her? Go ahead and fake it. But let me tell you, she’s only interested because you’re new and amusing. No woman’s going to stick around for a man who hides behind her all day, begging her to fight his battles.”
Before Harrison could finish, Adrian’s fist was already in motion.
The punch cut through the air, slamming into Harrison’s gut. Harrison never saw it coming—he tried to block, but Adrian’s blow landed squarely, knocking the glass from Harrison’s hand.
It shattered on the floor with a sharp, echoing crash.
Pain twisted through Harrison’s insides as he staggered back, barely catching himself before Adrian’s second punch crashed into his chest.
He’d expected Adrian to do what he always did: get teary-eyed and scuttle off to Selene. But not this time. This time, Adrian grabbed Harrison by the tie, yanking him close.
Harrison met Adrian’s eyes and saw nothing but cold, ruthless intent—a blade drawn in the dark, glinting with menace.
All the color drained from Harrison’s face. He’d always prided himself on his fighting skills, training in martial arts since childhood, especially after Leo’s accident. He’d never let his guard down. But Adrian was simply on another level; Harrison couldn’t defend himself at all.
