Monica’s mother understood perfectly well. “The teacher was actually thinking about borrowing a boy from the lower grades to help with the lifts.”
But even if they picked a second-grade boy, training him to do a proper lift—and make it look graceful—would take ages. Just getting the boy to hold his arms steady without shaking would require weeks of practice.
Monica’s mother smiled. “In the end, your daughter couldn’t stand watching anymore. She said she and her friends do this move all the time—she can lift Penelope and spin several times without even getting tired.”
Selene’s lips curled into a smile. Monica’s mother, Claudia, had once been the principal dancer with the Capital City Ballet. The school’s dance teacher was a professional too, of course, but in the world of dance, her accomplishments couldn’t hold a candle to Claudia’s.
That’s why, whenever the kindergarten kids practiced for a performance, the dance teacher always invited Claudia to help out as a consultant.
Selene asked, “So you’re the one who decided Dafina would lift Penelope?”
After all, lifts like that were always done by boys. Knowing how rigid the dance teacher was, Selene figured that even if Daph could easily lift Penelope, she’d never be allowed to do it on stage.
Claudia shot Selene a knowing look. “Your daughter’s got real talent. Just keep watching.”
Selene looked back at the stage. Daph rose onto her toes and spun into a perfect set of twelve fouetté turns, the crystal-studded hem of her dress catching the lights and scattering icy sparks across the floor.
She moved flawlessly, one turn after another, with no pause at all. Her toes tapped out a thunderstorm’s rhythm on the wooden stage.
When she finished the turns, she leapt three times in a row, her back leg slicing the air so sharply that, even from several yards away, you could almost feel the air shudder in her wake.
The parents in the audience gasped. Clarissa’s face blanched, and she shot to her feet.
“Why is Dafina doing all those turns and leaps?” she cried. “My daughter Penelope is the lead!”
Unable to sit still, Clarissa marched right over to Claudia.
“Mrs. Fairchild! You’re the one who gave Dafina these moves, aren’t you? This isn’t what I saw in rehearsal!”
Claudia sat with perfect poise, her voice gentle but firm. “Dafina learns so quickly, and she’s got the talent to match. Since she’s capable, I wanted to add a bit of difficulty to the choreography.”
