“Besides, you’re the family I chose for myself. To me, you’re my most important friend, someone I can’t imagine my life without.”
Megan’s chest tightened with emotion. She stepped forward and pulled Aurora into a tight hug, unwilling to let go. The two of them stood close, their bond stronger than ever.
…
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Yvonne groaned and pressed a hand to her forehead as she sat up in bed.
A sharp ache pulsed at her temples, and flashes of last night’s events kept flickering through her mind.
Then, out of nowhere, a deep, familiar voice came from beside her. “You’re awake?”
The sound startled her so much that the last traces of sleep vanished instantly.
She turned her head and froze, staring into a face she knew all too well.
“Edwin?” she gasped, clutching the blanket to her chest and instinctively inching back. “Why are you here?”
“Why am I here?” Edwin raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “You mean you don’t remember what happened last night?”
At that, panic flickered across Yvonne’s face. What exactly had happened last night?
She remembered inviting Edwin out for drinks, the alcohol burning down her throat, and then everything turned into a blur.
But why was she here now?
Glancing around, she quickly realized the room was completely unfamiliar.
The sheets, scent, and even the layout—it was definitely not her place.
Then she caught sight of the blanket draped over her and recognized it immediately.
It was a man’s.
“What exactly did you do to me?” Her voice trembled, the words breaking at the edges.
Edwin stared straight into her eyes, realizing from her serious expression that she genuinely believed something had happened. He almost laughed in disbelief.
“Wait, don’t tell me you actually think I did something to you?”
“Isn’t that the kind of man you are?” Yvonne shot back without hesitation.
Edwin blinked, utterly speechless. So that was how she saw him? All the effort he’d spent building a respectable image, and this was what she thought of him?
He couldn’t help a dry chuckle, shaking his head. Then he suddenly leaned closer, his tone dropping a notch. “If that’s really what you think, maybe I should’ve stopped being a gentleman last night.”
“You—what nonsense are you talking about?” Yvonne stammered, her pulse quickening under his gaze.
The look in his eyes—half amusement, half provocation—left her completely at a loss for words.
