"Laurence left?"
Cara realized this immediately.
"Bastard! He told me to pack up and that he would wait for me. How could he break his promise?"
Cara was too anxious to hold her tears.
Nicole hurriedly said, "Cara, calm down."
"How can I be calm? He's now the target of all the unknown dangers. His blood is so special that someone wants to drain it. Has he ever thought about my feelings when he left alone?"
"That's why I come to talk to you."
Nicole had thought that Cara would be emotional, still, she was shocked about how emotional Cara could be.
"Cara, listen to me. Samuel and I can swear on our lives that Laurence will be fine. You can kill us if anything happened to Laurence. Alright?"
Cara froze. Nicole seldom spoke in such a serious tone.
"Mrs. Green, please don't say those words casually. Quick! Spit the bad fortune out."
Nicole shook her head and whispered, "For now, I can't help Laurence at all. But, Cara, you can. Laurence can be saved only with your help. And it won't work if you go with him and get caught with him. Laurence planned this and kept it from you because he was worried that you would get out of control. Laurence has begun to carry out his plan. Can you handle it calmly as he has trusted you with his life?"
Cara stiffened again.
"What do you mean?"
"What I'm trying to say is that Laurence has never intended to shut you out. He went into the enemy's place as bait himself and left you the task of rescuing him. That means he has trusted you with his life. If you can't calmly cope with the situation, then I shall go to Country F to save him even at the risk of losing the child in my belly."
Tears welled up in Cara's eyes after she heard what Nicole said.
"How could he do that? And Mrs. Green, how can you go to save him? Your fetal situation is still unstable. You can't go."
"Then calm down and listen to me. You're not the old Miss Clint anymore. You are now Laurence's partner and my friend. One day, you may even become the master of the Night Elf Empire. If you can't cool yourself, I can't assign the task to you. I'll have to send another person on this mission even though that's against Laurence's plan."
Hearing Nicole's words, Cara immediately said, "I can calm down, and I will."
She fought back the tears in her eyes.
Nicole felt sympathetic to Cara. However, she knew that Cara must figure some things out on her own.
It was obvious that Laurence wanted to take advantage of this incident to let Cara gain a foothold in the Night Elf Empire. He was afraid that he wouldn't make it, so he had prepared a bright future for Cara.
As long as Cara performed well in this mission, she would be qualified to become the master of the Night Elf Empire.
Cara could be easily replaced if she was just a nurse. Even though Nicole wanted to be nice to her, the Green family wouldn't keep idlers with them. Cara was a girl with a strong personality. Once Nicole didn't need her as a nurse, she would just leave.
If she left the Green's, Cara would face an uncertain life. And Laurence didn't want Cara to live in uncertainty.
But Cara would be Nicole's lifelong companion if she became the master of the Night Elf Empire. With skills, status, and money, she could choose whatever kind of life she wanted to live even without Laurence.
Nicole knew Laurence's intention, so she respected Cara's choice.
"Cara, it's okay if you want to turn down Laurence's plan for you. Even if you are not the master of the Night Elf Empire, you can still stay at the Green's as long as you want to. We can always afford a special nurse."
Nicole made her idea plain.
Cara would not necessarily accept Laurence's plan, so Nicole asked for Cara's idea.
On hearing what Nicole said, Cara could no longer hold back her tears.
"I accept his plan. I know what Laurence wants. And I'm on the same line with him. Don't worry, Mrs. Green, I can handle this calmly."
Cara tried hard to repress her sorrow, which wrung Nicole's heart.
"I will definitely go with you if I can."
"You don't have to, Mrs. Green. Your health is Laurence's biggest concern. Before leaving, he said that he wished you to be safe and sound. You're special to him."
Cara wasn't jealous of Nicole. She knew that Laurence could live a normal life was thanks to Nicole and Samuel. And she was grateful for this.
"Alright. Now that you've made up your mind, just remember to be careful. Don't worry, we know Laurence's whereabouts. You can set off once they arrive. You can go prepare for it now."
"Yes, Mrs. Green. Take care of yourself while I'm away."
Cara felt excited at the prospect of being able to back Nicole up in the future.
"You too. I hope you and Laurence can come back safely."
"We will."
Nothing was more devastating than being unable to do anything about the foreseeable danger.
He held Nicole's hand and found her palm a little cold.
Logically speaking, as the cook had been providing extra nutrition for Nicole, she should have put on some weight. However, she became even thinner with her eyes sinking into their sockets.
Samuel felt very concerned.
"Was it also this bad when you were pregnant with Lucas and Zoe?"
Nicole noticed a trace of caring and regret in Samuel's eyes, and she felt relieved a bit.
"No, each pregnancy is different. Lucas and Zoe were very good babies in my belly. They seemed to know to look after their mommy, so I was fine. But it frightened me since I couldn't feel fetal movement at all. I was worried that the fire had hurt them. Every time I got a sonogram, I would ask the doctor if my babies were still alive. I couldn't bear recalling that period of time."
Nicole still remembered the time when she was pregnant five years ago as if it were yesterday. That upset Samuel even more.
"Sorry, I should have taken care of you and the children then."
"Yeah, I really wanted to kill you then. Especially when Zoe was taken into the intensive care unit right after she was born. I was on the verge of a breakdown. If it weren't for Lucas, I might already kill myself. It was such a hopeless period that I don't want to think about it."
Nicole never wanted to tell Samuel about those sad memories before. Maybe it was because of her pregnancy, she just felt like talking about them now.
"You have no idea how afraid I was to hear the doctor say that Zoe cannot make it when I woke up every morning. I was too stressed to provide any milk for Lucas. He cried out in hunger, but I couldn't take care of him wholeheartedly. He was allergic to the milk powder I bought, and his entire body was covered by a rash. The special nurse was not very attentive. She even mixed milk powder with water that was too hot and scalded Lucas' hands. I had a breakdown then. I even thought about tearing you apart bit by bit if you showed up."
Tears ran down Nicole's cheeks.
"Nicole."
"Don't touch me."
She felt like being trapped again in that isolated and helpless time five years ago.
"You have no clue of how much Mrs. Brook hated me. She always hoped that I would abort my babies. Even though Allen had been backing us up, he was not you or my babies' father. He was sent away on a business trip by Mrs. Brook when I was in labor. And the special nurse I hired was her subordinate. She wanted the special nurse to kill my babies while I wasn't capable of keeping an eye on them so that I would give up on you and go to live with Allen. I didn't even dare to sleep because I was afraid that I would lose my children once they were out of my sight. I am just flesh and blood. I couldn't hold up. Zoe had been weak for a long time, and I couldn't just leave her there. But I couldn't leave Lucas alone at the same time. I really hated you, so much!"
Nicole cried and thumped Samuel as she spoke. She knew that it was meaningless to say this now, but she was so aggrieved that she wanted to tell Samuel what their children had gone through and how helpless she had been.
Samuel let her hit him, but his heart hurt even more.
Samuel would never forgive Allen if he was still alive. He also found it hard to forgive Rachel.
