It was completely true.
Even though Zachary was the eldest son, in all of Caelus, the Governor held the absolute highest status. Even the retired grandfather and former Governor had to treat the current Governor with utmost respect.
Zachary? He was practically a nobody here.
"You—" Zachary's face changed drastically, looking as if he were about to explode.
"Enough, step down for now." Conrad pulled him aside, his voice cold.
"Father—" Humiliated and burning with rage, Zachary refused to back down.
The position and glory of Caelus were supposed to be his.
His!!!
"Did you not hear me?"
Conrad's tone grew sharp as he repeated, "Step down!"
Zachary scraped together the last bit of his sanity. Swallowing his fury, he scurried off the stage in disgrace.
Fine.
Once he seized the Governor's seat, he would make sure Channing begged for death.
"Why did you suddenly decide to show up?"
Conrad looked at Channing, his attitude starkly different from how he treated Zachary. "Didn't you say your grandfather wasn't feeling well and you'd be looking after him instead of attending the banquet?"
"To offer my congratulations to you, Father, of course."
Channing took his rightful place, arching a brow with a careless smile. "Or what did you think I was here to do?"
Conrad choked on his words, his nerves drawn painfully taut.
Channing had an erratic temper. Who knew if he'd suddenly do something utterly outrageous.
"It's not like I'm going to break someone's leg at a birthday banquet, right?!"
Conrad choked again.
Zachary touched his crippled leg, so furious he was on the verge of passing out.
The guests listened to Channing's thinly veiled sarcasm and could only offer awkward smiles, pretending they hadn't caught the underlying threat.
"Father, why are you suddenly so quiet?" Seeing Conrad's ashen face, Channing's lips curved into a smirk. "Weren't you just delivering quite the speech?"
Conrad clenched his fists, unable to muster even a fake smile.
"Since Father has nothing left to say, I'll take the floor for a moment."
Channing withdrew his gaze, speaking at a leisurely pace.
"After so much talking, I'm sure everyone is exhausted."
