Alaric Rhodes was Channing's grandfather, the man who had practically raised him.
At the mention of him, Channing's emotions clearly fluctuated.
"His health hasn't been great lately, but he told us not to tell you..." The subordinate embellished, making it sound incredibly serious.
He wasn't exactly lying.
His grandfather was feeling a bit under the weather, mostly because he had sneaked out for late-night fried chicken.
He had simply overeaten and was suffering from indigestion.
"Tell my grandfather I'll come back to visit him."
Channing tossed the signed documents back to his subordinate. "He's coming back too, isn't he?"
He?
The subordinate's brain worked in overdrive. His eyes widened as he asked cautiously, "Governor, do you mean Zachary?"
Zachary's name had almost become a taboo within the Rhodes family.
Exactly.
Channing Irving originally had the last name Rhodes.
Because he wanted to get close to Coralie without drawing unwanted attention, he had changed his name.
Channing remained silent, the sound of his fountain pen scratching against the paper filling the air.
It was soft, yet it pounded heavily against the subordinate's heart like a drum.
Clearly, he had guessed right.
Zachary had been exiled abroad for three whole years.
Rumor had it he was returning for this very banquet.
The subordinate opened his mouth, too terrified to answer the question.
Back then, Zachary and the former Governor had fought so viciously they were practically at each other's throats.
That kind of bad blood couldn't be resolved overnight.
If they ran into each other, a bloodbath was practically guaranteed.
"Dismissed."
Channing had already guessed the answer. He capped his pen with a cold smirk. "Conrad loves that son of his so much. How could he possibly miss his own father's sixtieth birthday?"
"Understood, Governor."
Having completed his task, the subordinate breathed a sigh of relief and hurried out with the documents.
Channing was left alone in the room.
