Inside the ward.
Kurt aggressively rubbed his eyes until they were red, staring bleakly at the ceiling.
"My baby—"
Monique rushed to his side, stammering, tears falling before she could even speak.
"Calm down, don't scare him." Hector supported his wife, whispering a reminder. "We don't know if Juniper told him about his condition yet."
What if he got too agitated and hurt himself further?
"You don't have to hide it from me. I already know." Kurt turned his head. Looking at them with lifeless eyes, his voice choked with emotion. "For the rest of my life, I'm probably just going to be a piece of trash confined to a wheelchair."
Monique's heart shattered hearing this. "Kurt, don't say that! There has to be another way."
"Even Juniper can't fix this. What else can be done?"
Kurt forced a bitter smile. "Didn't you guys want me to break up with Ebony Fox and stay by your side forever?"
"Well, I'm breaking up with her right now, and I'm coming back to you."
They had certainly wanted their son back, but absolutely not at this horrific cost.
"Dad, can you tell Ebony Fox to come in?" Kurt was putting on the performance of a lifetime—his face a perfect blend of thirty percent agony, thirty percent struggle, thirty percent inner conflict, and ten percent profound reluctance.
Hector frowned deeply, making no move to go.
A second later.
The door swung open, and a pale, serious-looking Ebony Fox walked straight in.
"You wanted to see me?" Her cool gaze landed on Kurt's face, her voice soft but gravelly.
"Yes."
Meeting her pain-filled eyes, Kurt was terrified he would break character and quickly looked away. "I've fallen for someone else. I want to break up."
"From now on, we're just friends."
"You can go. You don't need to wait outside my door anymore."
