“She had a gun. Shot Wilson right through the heart.”
“And Wilson… he was declared dead before they could even get him into surgery.”
Wiona almost jumped out of Conrad’s arms. “What did you say!?”
The news hit her like a brick.
Louisa killed Wilson? Why would she do that?
Her feelings for Wilson had never been normal. It was way beyond a daughter’s love, more like an obsessive, possessive attachment. If she didn’t care so much, Wiona could never have used her to uncover that secret cabin. How could someone with that kind of attachment just… kill him? None of it made sense.
And then there was the gun…
“Conrad, what kind of gun was it? Did you ask?”
Conrad nodded. “A Sig Sauer P226. The police are still trying to figure out how Louisa got her hands on it.”
Wiona’s face turned pale. “A handgun? Are you sure it wasn’t just a pellet gun?”
“I ran into Louisa on East Mountain Road, Number Eight. She threatened me with a pellet gun that day. I thought it was weird. Even pellet guns are illegal here, and now she somehow managed to get a real one? One that can actually kill someone?”
“Is it really that easy to get something like that?”
“It had to have come from someone. Someone gave it to her on purpose.”
“Who would do that? Why? Did they want her to kill someone?”
“To kill her own father?”
“Why would she go that far?”
Wiona’s thoughts were spinning out of control. She didn’t even notice how dark Conrad’s expression had gotten.
“You said she threatened you with a pellet gun? Wiona, why didn’t you tell me?”
She shook her head. “So much happened that day and it was all so fast. She never pulled that thing out again, so I assumed it was just a fake, just to scare me. Later, I started to get a weird feeling about it, but I didn’t want you to worry. I just texted Owen about it.”
Conrad’s eyes narrowed. “You told Owen?”
Wiona nodded, her voice steady. “Yes, I’m sure.”
Conrad grabbed his phone and called Owen immediately, putting it on speaker. “Owen, did you ever question Louisa about bringing a pellet gun that day?”
“Could it be the Thompson family?”
“The Thompson family worked with Wilson, made him pretend to be my father so I wouldn’t find out the truth about myself. They’ve got a motive. If Wilson’s gone, the truth dies with him. They just didn’t expect that I already know everything.”
“But do the Thompsons really have that kind of power?”
“And why would Louisa listen to them?”
“Can the Thompson family actually reach into both the police and the underworld in Stonehill?”
Wiona shook her head, not buying it. Conrad shook his head too. “From what I’ve found, the Thompsons just aren’t that connected in Stonehill.”
Whatever this was, it went way beyond normal family business. It was someone with reach, someone even Owen couldn’t get close to.
“Then maybe it’s not even a domestic group,” Wiona said, her eyes going wide as a sudden idea flashed through her mind. She looked at Conrad, heart pounding. “Conrad, do you think… could it be…”
Conrad’s eyes sharpened. “Y.”
They both said it at the exact same time, the same terrifying answer catching in their throats.
