Wiona glanced over at Conrad. He didn’t look surprised at all, like he’d seen this coming for a long time. Calm and collected, he flicked through the stack of papers Korey had handed him, reading carefully, every line getting his full attention. Watching him, Wiona felt herself start to settle down too. She sank onto the sofa, poured herself a cup of hot tea, and after a few gulps, her mind finally cleared.
“Devin was Eason. Conrad, you figured that out ages ago,” she said quietly. “So if this ‘LovesTheNightBreeze’ is one of Eason’s old crew, or maybe what’s left of them, then they came for our family for a reason. What are they after?”
“It’s a warning,” Conrad replied. “They want me to know that Y’s organization didn’t die with Devin.”
Wiona’s eyes widened. “Y? Who’s that?”
She’d never heard that name before. Conrad gave Korey a look and Korey immediately got the message, bowed his head, and slipped out of the room. Conrad walked over to the window and pressed the switch for the blinds. The room filled with sunlight as he spoke.
“Wiona, Alice and me were kidnapped by a group years ago, and their leader went by the codename Y.”
A chill rushed over Wiona. All the hairs on her arms stood up. She stood up quickly and hurried to Conrad, grabbing his hand with both of hers.
“Conrad, I always thought… I thought Devin was the one behind the kidnapping. Wasn’t he?”
Conrad shook his head.
“From what I’ve found, Devin—when he was Eason—was in charge of Y’s branch in Stonehill. He was always lurking in the background, making my life difficult. A few times, he tried to kill me just to see what would happen. That day, you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Wiona, I’m so grateful you and the babies were okay. I don’t even want to imagine what could’ve happened.”
Looking back, it really did feel like fate. If Conrad hadn’t protected her and their boys, none of this—this family, this life together—would even exist. At the time, he couldn’t have imagined he already had a wife and two sons. Now, less than a year later, they were closer than anyone could ever be. Life was crazy like that.
Wiona pulled Conrad into a tight hug.
“We’re going to be okay,” she whispered. “No matter what happened in the past, or what comes next, we’ll beat Y’s organization together.” She hesitated, then added, “But I still don’t get some things. So, Y isn’t Devin, but the force behind him? Or maybe Devin was just working for them all along. Even if he was involved in the kidnapping, he wasn’t the one pulling all the strings, just the head guy in Stonehill. So Devin might be gone, but this organization is still out there. And their roots go so deep that we haven’t even made a dent yet…”
