“I can’t just abandon my dad!” Louisa’s voice shook. “Wiona, he won’t acknowledge you, and you think you can come between us!”
“It’s not like that…”
Louisa’s words tumbled out in a mess. She turned away, hands tangled in her hair, and ran for the exit. But as she reached the opening in the wall, she collided straight into Bronwen, who had just arrived.
The moment Louisa saw her mother, she broke down, sobbing. “Mom! Tell me it’s not true… it isn’t, right? Everything they said inside is all a lie!” She choked through her tears. “Wiona said Dad did terrible things back when he ran that piano school… awful things to those girls… Mom, that can’t be real, can it?”
Bronwen froze, her whole body stiffening. She had rushed here, dust and sweat clinging to her skin, hair sticking messily to her forehead. Without a word, she gently moved Louisa aside and stepped through the hole in the wall.
Inside, her eyes landed on Wiona, standing in front of a wall covered in photographs. Bronwen leaned against the wall for support, her legs suddenly unsteady.
“Wiona…” she called, her voice barely above a whisper.
Wiona looked up, her gaze steady. She wasn’t letting anything slide this time. She needed answers, real ones.
“Bronwen,” Wiona said, her tone cold and clear. “when did you first realize Wilson had those… thoughts about me?”
Her anger burned brighter as she spoke. “It was Wilson who hurt all those girls. He’s the one who’s sick and twisted. He dragged you down with him, turned you into someone jealous and paranoid. Someone who sees every woman he hurt as a threat.”
Wiona grabbed the photos off the wall and tossed them at Bronwen. “Look at them. He said these girls seduced him? There are these children, some not even ten years old? Did they seduce him too? And you took him abroad, but if he was truly loyal, how did he come back and father twins with Mary? He cheated on you right under your nose, kept on hurting people. He’s a monster, Bronwen. If you have any heart left, wake up. If you don’t, then you’ll spend your life as his fool.”
Wiona’s words cut straight through Bronwen. Her hands shook as she picked up the photos, staring at the young, innocent faces. Her heart twisted painfully.
Suddenly, a wail broke out from outside, loud and desperate. “Daddy… Daddy, don’t leave us…”
