“A year later, when Bronwen left the country, her career just ended, right there. But what really drove me insane was that she married you. Sure, the Salisbury family used to be more powerful than the Holmes, but I never thought you deserved her. You never knew how to appreciate her. You had no clue how amazing she really was. Instead of protecting her, you and that snake Kellen teamed up to hurt her.
“Jace, do you even know how Wiona found out the truth about the surrogacy? That was me. I knew she was headed to your office that day. I knew she was standing right outside your door. So, I made sure you brought up the surrogacy on purpose, loud enough for her to hear. I wanted her to see who you really were. I wanted her to get away from the Salisbury family, before that place chewed her up and spat her out.”
The truth hit Jace so hard he could barely breathe. His eyes went wild with rage, and he forced himself up, stumbling toward Neil with his hands out, ready to grab him by the throat. But he didn’t get the chance. He was shoved back against the wall. Two bodyguards held his shoulders down and started beating him, fists and feet flying with no mercy.
They finally let go when Jace spat blood onto the floor. He crumpled to the ground, broken and gasping, clutching his aching stomach. He glared up at Neil, voice hoarse with pain. “Why… why didn’t you ever tell me… the truth? If I’d known… who she was… I would have treated her better…”
Neil yanked Jace up by the collar, eyes cold. “Treated her better? You think you deserve her? Jace, I forgot to mention something. The rumor that W was some big, scruffy guy with a beard? That was me. I started that rumor. You’ll never have W in this life. Just go live happily ever after with Kellen. She’s your true love, right? Don’t forget that. And stay away from W from now on.”
Neil spat at his feet and tossed out one last insult. “Dumbass.” Then he turned and left with his men.
Jace just lay there on the floor, staring up at the ceiling, and let out a guttural scream that echoed through the room.
...
When Tim came back, Wiona slipped upstairs with an excuse. She found Conrad sitting there, looking through one of her old sketchbooks she hadn’t put away. They were drawings from when she was a kid. They looked pretty childish, but there was something sweet about them.
She hadn’t expected Conrad to find them. She rushed over to grab the sketchbook, but Conrad just pulled her into his lap, arm around her waist, holding her close.
“My dearest Miss W,” he teased, “this sketchbook is a treasure. I love it. Think you’d let me buy it, so I can give it to our kids someday?”
Wiona’s cheeks turned pink. She tried to reach for the sketchbook, but Conrad held it just out of reach. She finally gave up and laughed. “Fine, look at it all you want. I know my old drawings are silly. Go ahead, make fun of me.”
