Three days later, the Wilkins family quietly spent a fortune to bail Wilson out of the detention center. Two days after that, Wilson was already back to his usual life, slipping right into social events as if nothing had happened. He made sure everyone heard his story, telling people his recent disappearance was all a misunderstanding, that the law would prove his innocence.
With Bronwen supporting him, people slowly started to believe it. The rumors about Wilson faded away, barely whispered anymore. Even those respected artists who’d witnessed the truth at the sanatorium kept quiet. Bronwen had always been close with them, and they’d all been taken care of behind the scenes. Even if they had their suspicions, no one dared say a word.
It almost looked like Wilson had pulled himself out of the mud, clean as ever.
On her phone, Wiona watched him, dressed to impress, laughing and chatting in the middle of a crowd, looking smug and completely at ease.
She muttered under her breath, “What a shameless jerk.”
Beside her, Tina was even more fired up. “How did he get out on bail?”
“Seriously? The evidence that he tried to kill Cassian was rock solid!”
“And now he’s out here, acting like he did nothing wrong. This is unreal.”
Wiona just stayed quiet. Tina still didn’t know the truth about her and Ms. Morden working together.
On the surface, it looked like Ms. Morden had approached Bronwen, dropping hints about how deep her connections ran. But really, the Sullivan family was pulling all the strings in the background. The Wilkins family was out of options. Even though Bronwen knew Ms. Morden and Wiona were close, she didn’t have a choice—she had to go to Ms. Morden for help.
Ms. Morden only wanted one thing. She wanted every painting by W that Bronwen had.
“You know these are worth a lot,” she’d said. “They’ll help our studio reach a whole new level.”
Other people might not know, but Bronwen did. She knew Wiona wasn’t just W, she was also Vivian. Those paintings were her leverage, her way to keep Wiona in check. If things ever went south, Bronwen could use those paintings to stir up trouble for her.
But now, Bronwen was backed into a corner. She had no choice but to hand them over. And even if she tried to hide something, or swap out a fake, Ms. Morden would know. She’d secretly send everything to Wiona to check herself.
Thinking about it, Wiona couldn’t help but smile. As for Tina, she’d keep her in the dark for now. When the truth finally came out, Tina would probably make a fuss for days.
Wiona put her phone away and looked up at the old courtyard in front of her. The gate had ‘Cassian K.’ written on it.
She led Tina inside.
She hadn’t been back in years, and the place felt empty and quiet. Only a few old staff members were still there, feeding the fish and playing with the birds. When they saw Wiona, their faces lit up.
“Wiona, you’re finally back!”
“Yeah, Wiona! Cassian told us you’re the new boss of Cassian K. He said you’d lead us back into the spotlight and restore our glory days.”
“We’ve been waiting for you. We were starting to think you’d forgotten about us. We were just about to ask Cassian for your address so we could drag you back ourselves!”
