“In that case, I’ll just find someone else. And if that happens, you won’t be of any use to me.”
Mr. Meraz practically screamed, his voice shaking. “I’ll read it, I’ll read it! It’s an honor to serve you.”
The lawyers behind him were trembling too. “We’re all witnesses. This is the real will. Whatever you say.”
Devin looked satisfied. “Smart choice.” He glanced around, taking his time to savor the fear on everyone’s faces. There was anger too, mostly from Wiona and Annette. They glared at him, fully aware of what he was about to do. Devin didn’t even bother with them anymore. He let his gaze drift, finally stopping on Sophie.
“You’re scared of me?” Devin squinted at her, then leaned in and lifted her chin. “That’s disappointing.”
His grip was so tight she nearly felt her jaw crack. He’d expected her to be more like Wiona, a little feistier, something that would keep things interesting. Instead, she just looked terrified. For Devin, this was boring. How could someone this weak ever be worthy of having his children?
Sophie heard the crunch of bone and cried out. Of course she was scared. She was a lawyer. She’d seen plenty of killers in her line of work. She knew exactly what kind of person Devin was. A complete psychopath. And to think, just moments ago, she’d actually considered marrying him. How could she survive if she did?
The fear in her eyes was impossible to hide. It made Devin even more disgusted.
Mrs. Clements sensed the danger in the air. She rushed over, pulling her daughter into her arms. “Devin, please, go easy on her. Sophie’s just young. She’s not afraid of you, she just doesn’t know you yet. She’s… in awe of you. Please, give her some time. She’ll love you, respect you, honor you. I promise.”
Mrs. Clements looked like she might drop to her knees and beg. Devin finally let go of Sophie, shoving her face away. “Useless. No wonder Conrad wanted nothing to do with you.” He wiped his hands, disgusted, and walked off.
