“So who’s really the one pulling all the strings here?”
Annette felt a wave of emotion crash over her as she listened to Wiona speak. She turned, tears brimming in her eyes, and looked at her thoughtful, gentle daughter-in-law. “Wiona… I… I…”
Only now did she realize just how much her daughter-in-law had endured for her sake. The rest of the Clements family saw Annette’s reaction, and suddenly everyone was on edge. Sophie, especially, looked like she was about to lose it.
“Wiona, you fake! You’re such a manipulative little bitch. Who are you even putting on this act for?” Sophie’s voice shook with anger. “Don’t tell me you’re not trying to steal Auntie’s heart on purpose.”
Wiona didn’t flinch. “I am,” she said openly. “I’ve been doing everything I can to win Mom back. I wanted her to see more of Alice, to see more of Conrad, to come home, to love her own children. Isn’t that what any family should want? Mom, if you think I’ve tricked you and you can’t accept it, I’m sorry. Honestly, I always saw you as someone I needed to reach. I just wanted you to truly come back to this house.”
Annette shook her head, tears in her eyes as she squeezed Wiona’s hand. “You’re a good child. I know you meant well. How could I ever blame you? Honestly, I should be thanking you. I was so stupid before.”
Hearing Annette admit her past mistakes so freely, Sophie suddenly felt ridiculous. She’d tried to earn Annette’s approval all those years… What did it matter now?
Her face twisted, eyes wild with rage and frustration. She wanted to scream, to lash out at Wiona right then and there.
Mrs. Clements gave Sophie a push, her voice sharp and impatient. “If you keep going like this, you’re going to lose your aunt forever!”
Sophie froze, like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over her. She was furious, but even more, she was unwilling to accept it. Clutching the arms of her wheelchair, her voice wobbled and grew pitiful.
