Phil had barely finished speaking before Annette jumped up, panic written all over her face. “What did you just say?” Her voice cracked. “No. No way. That can’t be true. It’s impossible!” She slapped herself hard, as if she could wake up from a bad dream, but the sting on her cheek told her this was all too real.

Her hands shook as she fumbled for her phone, dialing Conrad again and again. The call just rang and rang, no answer, no hope.

Wiona’s fork slipped from her fingers, clattering onto her plate. She looked pale, barely able to hold herself upright. “Phil, can you get a plane? I need to go to France myself. There has to be some mistake.” Her voice was trembling, desperate.

Annette grabbed onto the hope. “Yes, a mistake. It has to be. Conrad was trained by his father since he was a kid. Out of everyone in the Sullivan family, he’s the best. He doesn’t just protect himself, he protects all of us. How could he get shot so easily? This isn’t real. None of it is real. Please, hurry, get a plane, do something—”

Phil could hardly look at them. Pain flickered across his face as he shook his head. “There aren’t any international flights right now. I’m so sorry. Madam, please… you have to accept it. Peter already sent back photos… It’s him. They did surgery to remove the bullet, but… he stopped breathing during the operation. They tried everything. There was nothing more they could do. I’m so sorry. The Sullivan family needs you both now, more than ever.”

Wiona pressed her hands to her head, tears streaming silently down her face. Annette clutched her chest, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Suddenly she screamed, her voice raw and broken. “No! Conrad! Conrad!” She didn’t even finish before her legs gave out. She collapsed, hitting the floor hard, her eyes rolling back as she lost consciousness.

“Mom! Mom!” Wiona jumped up, rushing to her side in a panic.

Alice just sat there, frozen, too scared to move. Her whole body was shaking, her fear obvious. She didn’t understand what was happening. She only knew her mother and Wiona were in pieces, and now her mom was lying on the floor.

Wiona didn’t have time to comfort her. She told the servants to get Annette back to her room and called for Jason, the family doctor. She followed them upstairs without looking back.

Alice squeezed her eyes shut and covered her ears, on the verge of falling apart. Suddenly, a warm hand wrapped around her smaller one.

“Miss, don’t be afraid.” Phil’s voice was soft, almost gentle. “It’s going to be alright. This will pass, I promise…”
