Wiona wasn’t in the mood for small talk. She just kept raising the bid by big, round numbers. Her rival wouldn’t let up either, adding a hundred thousand, then two hundred thousand each time, always keeping right on her heels.
Before long, the price shot up to seven million. The whole hall was so quiet you could practically hear people holding their breath. Everyone was on edge, eyes glued to the stage, waiting to see how far this bidding war would go. Sure, sometimes things at auctions sold for tens of millions, even more, but those were rare, world-class treasures. The star items hadn’t even come out yet, and already a pendant that was maybe worth a million had been pushed all the way to seven million. People weren’t just surprised, they were stunned.
Everyone was tense and curious, wondering who would win. Would it be the man in seat eighteen in the second row, or the mysterious Vivian? What was it about this pendant that made both of them so relentless?
But compared to Wiona’s deep pockets, the other bidder was starting to waver. When the price hit eight million, the auctioneer was already on his third and final call before the man scrambled to add another fifty thousand.
“Number eighteen, eight million and fifty thousand. Vivian, would you like to continue?”
Wiona didn’t hesitate. She held up her paddle. “Nine million.”
That was it. Wiona’s confidence and unlimited resources carried her to victory, buying the pendant for nine times its value. The man in seat eighteen turned to look at her, his gaze heavy. Wiona met his eyes and, remembering how fiercely they’d battled, gave him a polite nod. He paused, then nodded back.
After that, Wiona lost interest in the rest of the auction. The organizers looked a little disappointed, but the bidding war over the jade pendant had already been the highlight of the night. Alice had fallen asleep on Molly’s shoulder ages ago, completely missing all the excitement.
When the auction finally ended and the crowd started to leave, Wiona’s phone rang. It was Remy. “Ma’am, are you still in the hall? I brought Miss Alice’s medicine.”
Since they’d decided not to go back to Hawthorne Hall that night, Remy had brought Alice’s medication to the venue. Wiona told her to come in. Faith was just coming out after sorting out the paperwork for the purchase, and Remy ran into her at the entrance.
Remy was surprised. “Faith?”
That’s when Wiona knew the whole story. Remy had a brother named Alex, who was a vice president at Sullivan Group and one of Conrad’s right-hand men. Faith, Conrad’s secretary, had married Alex last year. No wonder.
