Madison was all in, grinning as she waved her hand. “Order whatever you want. Seriously, I’m treating today.” Alice was Conrad’s little sister, so Madison made sure to treat her right.
Wiona stepped in quickly. “Don’t let her go overboard or we’ll just end up wasting food.” She gently took Alice’s hand, “Let’s pick just five of your favorite dishes, okay? You’re the best, Alice. You can count to five, right?”
That did the trick. Alice immediately got serious about picking her top five dishes, her face lighting up with determination.
Lunch went by without a hitch. When it was almost time for the auction, Wiona and Madison got ready to head out. But the moment Madison flagged down a taxi, Kyle suddenly appeared and blocked her way.
“I’ll take you home,” he said.
Madison shrank back a little. Wiona stepped up, standing between them. “What are you doing? Madison can decide for herself. She doesn’t want to go with you.”
Kyle’s heart twisted. His two sisters acted like he was some kind of villain. When had things gotten this bad? His face fell, and his voice dropped. “Madison, I’m not here to drag you back to the Morgan family. I just want to talk. If you want to go to the Simpsons, I’ll take you there myself. You still see me as your brother, right?”
Madison didn’t answer. She just clung to Wiona, her hand trembling a little.
