"For the first few years, someone actually kept tabs on our hospital,” the director said. “But eventually, they stopped. No one ever came to check on her, and the director just told us to treat her like a permanent patient. She’s become sort of a fixture here. Honestly, unless this place shuts down, she’ll probably live out the rest of her days here, never seeing the outside world again. You’re the first people who’ve ever come asking about her."
Wiona and Madison glanced at each other. If Cole was really behind all this, he was more ruthless than they’d ever imagined. He didn’t just abandon his mistress—he locked her away in a psychiatric hospital, destroying her life until she actually broke. He wiped out all records of Jewel, gave her a fake identity, and made her disappear. He paid off the police, paid off the hospital director. Who could’ve guessed that Jewel would end up living like a ghost in this run-down asylum, her life a never-ending nightmare? Not that she was blameless, but still...
Wiona couldn’t help but wonder: when Cole did all this, did he know his real daughter had already been switched by Jewel?
Kyle broke the silence. “When she was first admitted, did she say anything that stood out? Anything about the person who put her in here?”
The director hesitated, glancing down at the check sticking out of his breast pocket, then seemed to steel himself. “Yes. She did. I remember she kept shouting a name… Cole.”
His eyes flicked nervously to Kyle, who looked like he’d just swallowed something bitter. The director swallowed hard himself. “She also said, ‘One day, you’ll know what it’s like to be betrayed by someone you love most.’ And, ‘You’ll never get rid of me. You’ll never forget me, not as long as you live.’ That’s all I remember.”
When they were leaving, the director handed them a photo. “This was taken when Ms. Pearl was first admitted. There are some of her things here too. Maybe you can use them to find her family.” As he finished, the heavy iron gate started to close.
Suddenly, Jewel burst toward them out of nowhere, her hair wild, eyes frantic. “Cole, is that you? Did you come for me? I’m sorry…” She started laughing, the sound cracking at the edges. “Our baby’s sleeping so sweetly… Cole, come look… I’m singing him a lullaby… Come see… Cole! Cole!” Jewel reached out to Kyle, clearly mistaking him for the man she’d never stopped waiting for. An orderly rushed out, grabbed her, and dragged her back into the scraggly garden, her cries fading away as she disappeared around the corner.
A chill rippled down Wiona’s spine. The man she’d admired and called father all her life had this side to him, did these things. Just thinking about it made her sick. And for Kyle, who’d grown up worshiping his father, the truth cut even deeper. None of them felt like talking about it right now. They just stood there, quiet, outside the hospital gates.
